air cleaner or no air cleaner

Not that I'm considering running my car without an air cleaner, however, would removing it make any difference in any way?

I'm questioning my Harley Davidson K&N air cleaner size. I'm wondering if I'm smothering my engine. I guess I should remove it and drive home and see if it feels any different.

Yes it does make a diffearance.

60' 2.22 1/8 mile 9.91 @ 70.09 1/4 mile 15.57 @ 85.89 With air cleaner
60' 2.40 1/8 mile 9.92 @ 72.71 1/4 mile 15.38 @ 89.93 Without air cleaner

I always see gains like this at the track whenever I remove my filter element.

So whenever I race I always remove the element but leave the baseplate on the carb to help direct the airflow into the carb.

Someone on here had a neat website on how to adapt an aftermarket 4 bbl air cleaner to a 1 bbl carb by modifing the base of the aircleaner.

Later,

Doug

Weeelll, in my HP book on carburation, it says that for every gallon of gasoline, the engine takes in like 1000 gallons of air. So even if the dirt contamination is minimal, there will be a lot of it. Time to change that cheesecloth.

at one point I thought I had done a how to of that. I ended up making one out of an edelbrock filter assembly. basically what I did was cut the bottom out of my old filter housing, then cut out a similar shape with the one your trying to adapt but leave a little space all the way around. I stuck a small bead of silicon allllll the way around and rivited them together. from the top you cant tell that it was modified but it really wasnt the prettiest thing if you took it off... this is the only pic I have of it I Think... its pretty small though.

I plan to go to the strip next month & i will test out the no filter deal.

I have an innovate wide band air fuel tester & some brands of air filters richened the mixture .5

The wix was on my engine for about a month when i ran the test, & my element is 14" X 3". This will fit a modified log engine, but will be too large in diameter for the OZ head or Classic inlines head & intake.

My filter had a droped base so filter to hood clearance is no problem.

My present filter has a K&N element and a air stream top which also filters.

There is no restriction here. My air fuel ratio did not change at all.

wsa111, I read a report, maybe in Car Craft or Hot Rod, that tested air filters and yours was the best perfoming one they came up with. I'm really thinking I've been starving my engine of air.
As for mpg, I'm probably helping increase it with what I have set-up currently. More air, more gas, less mpg...

lagrasta i think k&n an most of the high perf. filters have a cfm rating on their web site dependining on how you stay in the throttle, you may get better fuel econ. w no filter. by the way saw your ride in hot rod i believe, lookin good later
