Alternator Fubar

Moron here. I went to replace my alternator, so I detached all the wires and forgot to draw a diagram and or mark the wires as to what went where. Needless to say I'm not sure what goes where and I dont want to hook it up wrong and blow something up. Anyone got a diagram I can use? please. (tail between legs)

I did that once, after about the 3rd try and getting it wrong I went to my local parts store and believe it or not they had an extra work sheet for installation showing where and how all the wires attached. This last time I used a color marker for each wire and marked the color right on the alternator. On my diagram it shows the Black w/red stripe wire combined with the radio interference capacitor going to the GRD connector post. The Black w/yellow stripe with the lead to the radio capacitor goes to the BAT connector post. The white FLD wire goes to the left of these toward the center of the alternator on a post there.....All these the BAT, FLD and GRD leads are all bunched pretty close together on the bottom right of the back of the Alternator as you look at it from the back. The last wire is toward the top of the back of the alternator it is in my diagram the white wire with the black stripe labeled STA.. My diagram shows another terminal to the lower left and I am not sure what that is....I know a drawing would be simpler, someone here probably has a diagram.

abbreviations are:

BAT- Battery
STA- Starter Relay?
FLD- Field??
GRD-Ground

The saga continues. I installed the alternator, had it checked out, everything is wired up right (thanks for the help) and now it isnt putting out enough amps to keep the brand new battery charged.
I found this out, after having the Ranchero in the trans shop getting the trans rebuilt. They told me my starter relay is shot, and I should probably replace the voltage regulator while I'm at it. I figure I'll replace all the battery/starter/ground cables as well while I'm doing it.
Any suggestions?

Background questions, before I assume anything:

What year and model car?
Did it originally have a generator, and if so, did or are you converting it to an alternator?
You have an external regulator for an Alternator, right?

I picked up a new starter relay and voltage regulator from NAPA. Hopefully I'll get a chancce to install them this weekend!

Hello All! Got the alternator/battery situation resolved. Put in the new regualtor and starter relay and all was well. So as I am not exactly that mechanically "with it" I took the Ranchero in to B&R Automotive (25th Ave and McDowell in Phoenix) to get a tune up, etc. A month later I get it back. Here is what they discovered (and fixed)....

Rebuilt the carb
Replaced the Distributor advance springs
Replaced the Pertronix unit I had for a new one that wasnt f'd up
Replaced the Dizzy with a reman dizzy
Replaced the exhaust donut gasket cuz it was leaking

The Ranchero runs really well (in fact I havent felt it run like this ever so it feels kind of weird. Got it up to 70 on the Loop 101 coming home!

So now that the trans and motor problems are solved (fingers crossed) I can start working on appearance and other items, like new wheels and tires! Then I'll upgrade to a header and better exhaust and a 2 or 4 bbl carb.

B&R treated me well, I will go back there if I need them (I most likely will as I am just a novice when it comes to autos). OR I will buy the parts and pay them to install them so I know its done right! Either way, kudos to these guys. Oh, the reason it took so long (a month) was because when they solved one problem they went to the next and parts ordering and waiting and well you know how it is. They kept me posted for the whole thing.

No.... starter relay (pronounced star-tor) next to the battery on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

well, other than the pronounciations...

The "Starter" has nothing in common with the "Stator" other than they are both electrical components.
