what is in that dampner?????? and has anyone cut that big flywheel up??? its heavy!!! it could stand to lose a lbs. or two? mine is going in a roadster!

Ford used two vibration dampers on the H series motors. There was a viscous type and a solid type. The viscous damper is thicker than the solid, and a different diameter. If your damper is fairly skinny you have the solid type. My H car motors have the solid and my M motors have the viscous. If I remember correctly the wide belt pulleys were usually viscous and the narrow belt pulleys were usually solid. You should see two timing pointers on you timing cover. One is for the viscous damper and one is for the solid. The shop manual says to use the pointer that lines up with the outer diameter of the damper.

I think the flywheel is interchangeable with the flathead eight. I know the starters (except ones for the fordomatic trannys) and clutches are.

Bad news. The flathead six flywheel is not shared with the flathead eights. There is a difference of two teeth in the ring gears.

thats strange? you would think they would make them the same. so the starters are the same?????? if a guy needs a ring gear he might be looking hard?
