another stupid duraspark question

i read somewhere that a lot of installing the duraspark deals with having the right amont of voltage applyed to the system. does anyone know what that is because i have a feeling mine is weak. if i gap my plugs to .045 it misses more than if i have them say at .035. any ideas? cap, rotor, plugwires are new. plugs have about 3500 miles on them and are autocraft 46 plugs. all of the plugs looked red almost like rust the end plugs had more rust coloring on one side then the other was almost white.

around here, Exxon gas has a tendency to color the plugs and exhaust valves red from its additives.

When does the "missing" occurr? At idle or under heavy load?

it only misses at idle and it is random not like one cylinder consistantly. there are times however when i start it and one cyl will miss till i rev it then it will pick up. it has not done the one cylinder consistant miss on start up though since i re-gaped the plugs to .045. i live in ca if that helps at all and i know that out here our gas is special and has up to 10% ethenol. i was not aware corn turned your plugs red  anyways as long as it is not lean i am happy.

yup, all fuel in the Mid Atlantic is E10 also (10% ethyl alcohol) Its the additives that turn the plugs and valves red, not the ethanol.
