AU Manual Pedal Box Failure

Anyone else had fun with this? I repaired one today.

Disconnected most of the wiring plugs, slipped them off their mounting prongs and removed the column (not too hard).

Undid the seven 13mm nuts holding on the pedal box after unhooking the brake clevis yoke and clutch cable yoke. Removed the pedal box.

Clutch swings on separate shaft to brake; thinner and only secured on one side - pretty stupid really. It had started to tear free from the pedal box.

My mate Cameron brazed it all together after bashing back in shape, primered and left outdoors for an hour.

It went back in fine; the clutch travel is better (but still very stiff). Some observations:

Pedal box was not the original. It had the Ford service part sticker peeled off. Nuts were barely past finger tight. The original spring pin and thick washer had been lost from the clutch cable pin/yoke, causing its nylon bushings to cock and chafe. The pedal assist spring had fatigued and snapped. Safety retainer on the steering shaft was found not installed correctly when dismantling.

I'd have to say that if the part lasts so little time (one replacement plus a repair in 120K kms) - it is a crap design. Look forward to anyone else's experience or hearsay with this.

Regards, Adam.

I like autos for these sort of reasons (apart from the lazy aspect). Everything from engine to diff is stressed less and obviously the pedal box too!

That all said and done, I can see the AU XR or Ghia column being a great transplant if you want a "resto-rod". The adjustment capability was pretty large and it's very well packaged. Gimbal thing in the firewall (support bearing) is a nice option for swaps, too.

Are the BA pedal boxes breaking? With their hydraulic clutch, design is obviously changed.
