I am installing a replacement Autolite 1100 carb on my 67 Mustang (it had a Carter carb) and need pics of a typical installation. Does anyone have any pics of a stock installation they'd like to share with me? I don't think I have all the lines installed correctly. Help! I would appreciate it if I could get some closeup pics of the carb without the air cleaner on. Or pics of a manual's instructions. Thanks for your help...

Thanks for the reply Ryan. The pic gives me some insight on the installation, but I'm still looking for a stock pic (I know, I should've gotten the Holly). The Autolite carb has two openings for lines of sime kind, but I don't know which is which. One's gotta be the choke, and the other a vacuum (perhaps). I need to find out how to install this darn thing. It's driving me nuts!

yes the autolite 1100 has a vacuum line...motorcraft/holley one doesnt

just a schematic:

Check out my avatar....I can take some more if there is anything specific you need. Let me know.

It's really simple, heat choke goes from diapraghm off the rear side of carb to heat choke riser. Fuel in the front and one vacuum line to the port on the passenger side for advance.

Thanks for the replies. A couple of more questions: Where does the hot air choke connection physically connect to my manifold? Any pics of that anyone? Also, what size fittings do I need for each of these connections 5/16?

I've had such a hard time installing the Autolite carb on my car since I don't have anything to reference it to. I haven't seen any manuals for this carb anywhere. Lot's of people seem to install Holleys. How reliable is the Autolite anyway? Good gas mileage?

I bought my Mustang with a Carter carb and was having major hood clearance problems. I believe that particular carb was from a pick-up since it's really tall.

The hot air choke should be a hollow tube which runs through your exhaust manifold and exits under neath near the block. Do you have headers? If yes, you just need to run the heat choke tube alongside the header and hold in place with a hose clamp. Screen over the end will keep out debris.

Vacuum through the carb pulls hot air through the heat choke, expanding a spring and opening the choke. I also ran my heater hose alongside the back of the carb...it fits in the big clamp on the most rear of the carb.

Good luck...and it is not that hard.
Let me know if you need any more pics or have questions.

dependent on what exhaust manifold you have (this applies to stock) there is a little hole on top of it that the hot air tube sticks into.

very little

mine has a sort stem sticking out...it evidentally broke. hard to find

drill out piece that is stuck in there and new tube fits right in-until recently, hot air tube kit was still available as a dealer part!even had a little fiberglass jacket to wear over it!

I asked my auto shop teacher today about what I thought was a plugged off vacuum line coming from my carb. He told me that it is the line that goes from the exhaust manifold to the choke. I have tried everything else, could this be the problem for my horrible gas mileage?

Simon, if you drew that carb picture, I have to extend my now-usual congratulations on your artwork.

If it stays closed after the car warms up, then yes.
Unplug it and hook up a thermal riser from the manifold. Make sure the pull-off spring works and that it is connected to the choke pulloff.
