Autolite 1100 vent rod or lack there of

My Autolite 1100 has a piece of brass tubing with a 90* bend where all the pictures I can find has a vent rod and valve. It started out as a Cali emissions equipped car if that makes a difference. When I got the car there was nothing on this tube, but I have put a rubber cap on it. Should I leave this cap on it, or does it need to be open to allow the carburetor to vent?

From what I've seen the 'vent tube' type 1100 was more common to the Econoline vans, and IIRC the tube might have been connected to a length of open ended rubber hose (almost like an axle vent). Intended to be open venting for the fuel bowl if I'm not mistaken, and believe it was more common on the vans because the heat building up in the engine 'doghouse' required this kind of relief for sufficient fuel bowl venting. Do you know if it's the original carb?
EDIT: You could run it like that [open venting], or adapt it to a normal vent rod setup, or even get by just capping it loosely like you see on many of the rebuilds (not a hermetic seal by any means). I don't think you'd want to tight of a seal there, so you could allow for some fuel bowl venting. Hopefully others will correct me if I'm leading you astray. Good luck :thumbup:
 
I don't know about the vent tube you describe, but if you want to swap it back to the vent valve push rod and spring, Champion Mustang has them.

Is there an advantage of one over the other?
