Autolite 1100 vrs 1101 How to tell?

I have a 240, I think, in a 65' F-100 The dizzy is definitely a loadomatic (vac only). But the carb has no spark advance valve. The engine has been replaced early on (late 60's) with a remaned engine. The carb is a 1100 or 1101.

Reason I ask -- I want to upgrade to a vac/mech dizzy. But I read that the earlier loadomatic carb and dizzy were kind of "made for each other". Specifically, the vacuum from the 1100 loadomatic unit was lower, basically a mix of ported and venturi vacuum. So if you attach it to a standard dizzy (66-73) vacuum, you get little or no vac advance.

Who knows how to tell a later, non loadomatic carb from the earlier carbs? Are all 1100 carbs loadomatics? Are all 1101 carbs the better, 215 cfm airflow units that went with the big sixes? Any good way to tell them apart?

Thanks.....

Howdy cdherman:

The easiest way to identify an1101 is to measure the throttle bore, the hole in the botom. It it is an 1101 it will measure 1 11/16" diameter as compared to 1 7/16" and 1 3/4" on the 1100s. Another difference is the venturi measures 1.29" as opposed to 1.2" or less for the 1100s. Most 1100 had hard plastic and removable ventrui inserts. The 1101 venturi is cast in and solid. All 1101s are rated at 215 cfm.

1101s were 1st used in cars and trucks on the 223 engine starting in '63. It was used on the 250 engines in '69 only. This 1101 doent not have the SCV. The 1101 was replaced by the Carter RBS in '70 on all engines.

'68 & '69 1100s and 1101s did not have the SCV. 1101s used with a Load-a-matic ignition system have a SCV.

In stock applications the 240 was a car engine. All pick-up and trucks got the 300. Of course, if this is not a stock engine, anything is possible.

If it really is a 223, I'm not sure that you have an option to upgrade to a later mechanical advance distributor. I don't know about interchangeability between the 223 engine family and the 240 family.

I hope that helps.

David, Thanks for the info. Trying to figure out my setup has been a challenge. I have since talked to ponycarbs, who was helpful. The lack of a spark control valve does not determine if its a 1100 or 1101, though 1101s did not have it. Later 1100's didn't either.

One correction to your post. 240 engines were definitely stock in pickups. Available from 65 till early 70's. Earlier pickups had smaller 6's I think.

I'll need to pull the carb and do some measurements. Ponycarbs says there is a brass "vent" tube that sticks out the top of the 1101 as well, which I'll have to look for.

Can anyone tell me -- is the later carter carb a bolt up if my intake was drilled for the 1100? Ponycarbs says to rebuild the 1100, but I hear a lot of you saying to get rid of it.

Thanks again.....
