BA Fairmont Auto trans problem

Is anyone able to help with some advise on what could be done for my Fathers BA Fairmont he recently bought new.
He tells me hes had it back twice under warranty to try and rectifiy a fault with the Auto trans and has not been able to find out the cause.
While slowing down nearly to a stop and after re-applying the accelerator the is a definite "clonk" sound coming from the Trans as it changes up. It usually happens 2 or three times on his way to work.
The Ford service centre said they have had the same problem but worse with a Police BA falcon they have been asked to look at.
Has anyone had anything similar occure? Any suggestions?

Swap for the police one? That'd pay. No more traffic fines...

Sounds like some kind of roll-out thump. You can bet the BTR boys will know all about it!

Ford will stand by its product. You need to winge more, and get it sorted. It could in fact be electronic control related. The whole trans system is brilliantly strong compared to the early X and E-car transmissions.

My old BW 35 could be tunned with a spanner, though. Don't know what you do with the new ones.

Excuse my ignorance, but what are the BTR boys. I really what to help him get this fixed as I recommended the car to him. He is prepared to pay to get it fixed himself if Ford cant help.

hey tim, i work with cabs a fair bit down hear in geelong, the most prob cause is the varible pressure solenoid, it controls how firm the shifts r by variaring the pressure. we have had ef-au3 cabs, that even on light acceleration from 1st to 2nd will feel like they have a shift kit and nearly chirp tyhe tyres, the ford guys would def know what it is.

but tim thats just a gues at what it is , itys a common fault with the btr autos, looking at 200 pluss just for the solenoid.

My father tells me that he has been advised that there is something like 20 or so of these variable pressure soleniods (valves?) making it very difficult to know which one is giving trouble. Is this correct?

BTR is the local company formaly known as Borg Warner. In 1989, they reformed there company, and despite only a few takers for there LE and T5 Aussie transmissions, they have gained very high proffit margins supplying only to Ford, Holden, Volvo and Maserati. So they BTR have no reson not help. But its Fords car, there responsibility.

Just my opinion. If its electronic, it will have fault codes and full diagnostic capability. Any competent Ford Service personal should stand by there product and fix it pronto.

The BTR box is fully electronic, but there are conventional hydaulic circuits which are controlled by the control module. Like any auto trans. The point is, all faults exhibit fault codes so BTR don't have to have the transmission returned to them in the field. So Ford will know implicitly what it is from the breakout box or fault codes. Betcha backlash or A7M are aware of where/what to look for.

Rather than tell him to complain more vigourusly, perhaps there is a Ford forum for the Aussie sixes and v8's which can help. Addo gave me a heap of BTR info from a link to a forum a while back, but I can't remember where it is.
