All Small Six bench test a starter?

This relates to all small sixes
hey, I was hoping someone could help me out here. My 67 Mustang won't start. When I hit the key it sounds like the starter is spinning but the engine isn't turning over. The battery is fairly new and fully charged. I pulled the starter off and what to check and make sure its engaging like it should, so how can a safely test it so I can see the gear? Thanks.

Hi, many auto parts stores will have a test bench. I have always used jumper cables, black to a mounting ear, and red to the post.
HOLD ON! Good luck.

What sound like what is happening is the ''Bendix'' is slipping, it is a one-way clutch for the gear part. the gear is not solid to the starter shaft, it is made to slip forwards when the engine starts, or it would over speed and fly apart. It is part of the gear part.
I do not know if a starter tester checks that part, it can feel good but does not hold well enough it turn over the engine.
It can be replaced, not hard, just have to be careful that the shaft does not slide out or you will have a hard time getting the brushes back in place. This condition usually starts out working and getting worst until it will not hold at all.

It also could be the teeth on your flywheel ( ring gear) are worn to the point that the starter teeth won’t engage. This also gets worse with time and will make a noise. You can turn the engine a little- to get past the bad tooth- and it will engage if this is the problem. Sometimes if you bump the starter several times, sometimes this will get it to engage. Either way , time for a repair

I just put mine on a bench with a 12V battery, connect the negative to the starter case and positive to the big stud on the back. It's not at all uncontrollable or dangerous.
