I am sure this is posted somewhere. but how would you clean out a engine? Ive read thin oil with some good engine cleaning product. Ive aso heard the diesel fuel works good too.

You can try ATF automatic transmission fluid. Once an engine is sludged up its a good chance any solvent will just break loose sludge & clog the oil pump screen & possibly even seizing the oil pump.
I hate to tell you this, but once an engine is sludged up, piston rings stick in the piston grooves, oil starvation occurs.
Either scrap the engine or dissemble it send it to a machine shop to clean in a degreaser tank, soak in carburetor cleaner & rebuild it to new specifications.
Do it right the first time & don't try to fix a condition with chemicals.
Good luck, you just can't fix a problem by a previous owner idiot who just didn't change oil. William

if the motor runs and all with no valve problems I would just run it as is. modern oil has detergents in it and will clean itself out over time. my 170 loosen up and became more peppy after about 10K

well i have some valve noise at higher rpm. and when it idles after being warmed up. so i just want to try something different. i have another motor to swap in so if this one starts to have problems out it goes. i read somewhere (another site) and this is what i am going to do. when i want to change the oil i am going to throw in a half quart of atf fluid. run it for about 50 miles not above 50mph then dump it. then run new oil in it for about 50 miles dump that then run my 10w30 in it.

I don't know if this applies to your problem but when i usedb fram filters my oil press dropped after a short time and I got lifter noise no problem after going to Purolator good luck Joe

Purolator Pure One has the highest oil pressure increase and the most filteration material. It's more dense than others. I get 15-20 lbs more than fram or motorcrafts.

ive been using disel fuel all my life on every other oil change. just leave the drain plug out a dump abot 4 cups of disel fuel down where the oil goes wait till it drains out then take 1 quart of oil and run it through then plug back up the pan change em filter and ur all set. works great on sludge removal carbon ext.

Just to save some time, the Purolator and the Motorcraft are the same filter. From the Oil Filter Study site:

Long Lasting FL-1A
This is an interesting filter. Basically, it appeared to be a Purolator Pure One filter cartridge in a Purolator Premium Plus case. Don't be fooled by the differently shaped holes cut into the oil inlet. This is the only difference. I have, however, seen that the Motorcraft line tends to change manufacturers. For a while they seemed to be Champion Labs filters, then they went back to Purolators. I also received some information from a Ford technician that the filters that come on the vehicles from the factory are not the same as those that are available to the dealerships.

Like the Purolator Pure One, this filter cartridge features a very large element surface area (400 sqin), but with many pleats (64). This packs the filter together rather tightly and could possibly restrict flow somewhat. I believe could identify the Pure One element media by a purple dye they use at the seam and by the texture. It also has the mysterious assembly string wrapped around the outside of the element. Like the Purolators, it features a spring-loaded metal bypass valve and a nitrile rubber diaphram-type anti-drainback valve. The bypass valve is stamped right into the bottom end cap of the cartridge, so it is all one piece.

For an interesting read, visit the site. As always, your mileage may vary.

ive seen that before. i didnt realize they are the same .i got a FL-1A from my mustangsandmore pollyanna so i will just use that.
