Big bell housing

I bought a 200 from a wrecking yard in Tok Alaska this week. It is a mid 80's block with a auto attatched. Is there a chance that my bell housing that is on my Bronco (170 1968 vintage) wont fit?. I was looking at Ford six website about casting number and saw "big bell housing" on the listing for the casting numbers beginning with E.

The Auto is available to anyone who wants it, but shipping would be high. I will probably just dump it. It is out of a 85 fairmont (he said).
 
If the starter is mounted down low, instead of up around the top of the block. It is considered a bb, and no your bell will not hook up.
 
the block has D6DE with a line below it containing the letter B

I braved the monsoon outside to see that the block has C6DE 6015 AB.

I guess I got a 250 , expensive boat anchor. I dont feel up to the mods required to put this motor in.

Nobodys fault but mine.

I haven't seen a 250 in years. there are a lot of folks who would like to get their hands on one.

I would do the mods - - that Bronco could use the extra torque.
 
I have been thinking really hard on this, I am going to put the engine on a stand, disassemble and then mock it up just using the block. I do have a 3.03 tranny assembled to a t-case already. Just trying to get past the plan to have a basically drop in swap.

Can I use a 300 flywheel?

I guess the biggest obstacle is the front sump oil pan. Did the 250 ever come with a rear sump?

Which is it? C6DE or D6DE? If it's a "C", then it's not a 250.
 
This engine has a low mount starter and a tall block, it has to be a 250. If there is not a reasonable fix for the oil pan, I will contact the seller to try to get the 200. The front sump wont clear the axle on my bronco. Being 450 miles from the seller doesnt help. If that doesnt work out...SPLASH
 
Member "jturcic" modified his 250's sump to clear the steering. There are pictures floating around. If this is indeed the only hurdle, surely it's worth cracking?

If anyone knows where these pics are please let me know, I have a 250 pan with a rough looking sump that I thought about putting a deeper sump on, but I can't seem to find any sump that I could weld on it.

Hello Bill,

If all else fails I will at least keep the head off this motor. Should that be the case if you want the pan, we could see what it costs to mail it to you. Shouldnt be more than ten bucks or so. It would be nice to get a few bucks to offset my expense on this motor also. This may not happen immediately as I am working 45-50 hours a week. In addition I have not really examined the pan but I am sure it doesnt leak as the motor still has oil in it.

68 bronco, hi ive been away and havent seen a computer for awhile. anyway i put a 250 in my 66 along time ago. the oil pan is an issue but if you know a good welder or shop its an easy problem to solve. if you put the 170 rear sump pan beside the 250 pan and turn them upside down you will see where the bottoms have to come off at the point where the bottom of the 170 pan will fit the top of the 250 pan. draw a line around each pan and burn the bottoms off with a cutting torch then weld the bottom of the 170 pan to the top of the 250 pan. fill the new pan up with water and let it sit for a few hours. if there are any leaks reweld that section. the 250 bolts up to the same motor mount holes on the tower but dont use the 170 motor mounts. because of the longer stroke on the 250 it has super torque. your 170 block has 2 motor mount bolts while the 250 has three the mounts also need a safety tab to stop the engine torque over from seperating the rubber and tearing the left mount apart. i used the motor mounts for a 76 maverick i got them at the local parts shop for about $30canadian they were real cheap as parts go. the next issue was the alternator power steerig pump etc. everything hooks up ok as long as you use the 250 brackets etc. the 170 brackets wont mount on the 250. next the bottom hose pipe on the 170 rad is too small i think its 11/2 inch diameter and the 250 is 2inch diameter so you have to go to a rad shop or unsolder the small pipe yourself and solder in a larger pipe. i used the 170 rad for awhile but i found it was a bit too small to cool the larger engine in the summer 4 wheeling in the mountains. i went to the junk yard and got a rad out of a pickup with a 300 six in it. it was easy to put in and had the right size lower pipe. next was the fan. because the bronco engine compartment is so low the upper rad hose hooks up to the pump so low under the hood that the fan blades are too long. at first i cut about 2 inches off the fan blades to get the clearance but eventually i put on an electric fan. i tried a couple of fans from perma cool and some other hi teck really expensive outfits but ireturned them when i got a fan from jc whitney with a control for around $90. it said it put out about 2400cfm and seemed to work better than the expensive ones. ive run it for seven years and never had a problem. the last problem was hood clearance for the carb. i fought this for a long time. i started with an autolite 1101 this just fit under the hood with the 170 air cleaner but wouldnt pass air care here. a carter yf was way too tall i tried a carter rbs with a tube and airbox from a 4 cylinder capri or something i found in the junk yard i didnt like the rbs it had aslow response and burned too much gas so i found the best carb i think for the 250 it is a carter yfa off an early 80s 4 cylinder ranger pickup it has terrific throttle response and is good on gas but i only had 3/4 of an inch clearance under the hood. i spent hours fabricating air cleaners as i didnt want to put on a hood scoop. this leads me too the thing i should have done in the first place. i put in a 2inch body lift that took me about a day to install and all i had to do was extend the rear brake line bracket about 2 inches and lenghten the license plate lite wire. it was so easy it solved all my clearance problems and only cost me about $80. i now run a huge air cleaner off a 300 six truck and i could run a full size engine fan if i wanted im still kicking myself for not doing it sooner. anyway your probably falling asleep by now. 2 more things your distributor from the 170 will fit or if the 250 has an electronic box you can mount it on your fender and wire it in. the last thing is the exaust pipe you have to cut a section out of the pipe and put in a longer piece [between the exhaust manifold on the engine and the bend where it goes under the body]. i know ive run on for a long time but i wanted to cover all the bases so you know what your up against. it might sound hard but i found that once i figured out what i had to do it was fairly easy all the parts fit well and it didnt cost that much money. ive done alot of modifications to my bronco but the 250 was the best one. it has more torque than a 302 lots more power than a 200 and doesnt burn as much fuel as a v8. if you decide to go to the trouble of putting the 250 in you wont regret it and if you put a 2inch body lift in first its almost as easy as putting in the 170. good luck ..........larry PS one more thing the 250 has the same bell housing as a small block v8 so you can use a bronco 3 speed or an np 435 0r a t18 or a c4 auto and many more the clutch arm tube that your clutch rod comes down to on the frame also bolts up to the 250 and there are quite a few granadas and mavericks etc. out there with standard flywheels and clutch and pressure plates. the 302 flywheel is exactly the same ring gear etc. but it wont work as the balance is different for a v8.
