Brake Pads

Hello! It appears it is maintainence time, and I have to spend some money [cough splutter!]. I need to change the front and back brake pads on my XE wagon and I am wondering what pads I should consider... I have the standard front calipers and those rotten old (XD/ZJ) type cast iron rear calipers. Cost is a consideration, but wear rate and quality are very important too. Any ideas?

Thanks.
Kendall.

Don't use the stock Repco or Supercheep ones, go for the next grade up. We went through a set of 35 buck front pads in 6 months in our regular 900 foot climb from our old place to my work each day. Dust everywhere over the front wheels. My wife doesn't soft pedal the picks, but when we went to the next, more expensive set from our friendly Ford dealer, they were so much better.

I replace the discs themselves with stock used ones from XC Falcons, and the rear discs are a bit of a lottery for Falcons depending on the year. Late 9" inchers from 5.8 XB's and XC's Fairmont GXL's have different set-up to the 4.9 Fairlanes and Fairmont GXL's. Thick origonal disks that havent been machined becauser they don't need to be work well. I re-bled brakes each year with Castrol LM, and although I had discs and drums on my old XE sedan , the brakes with good 235's and 245's around were one of the best parts of the car, wet or dry.

Hello! Xtaxi, I used to use bendix metal kings - they wore well but needed time to warm up. I have also been told they tend to rip up the rotors a bit... Any clues? Is there a brand and type you can suggest?

Thanks
Kendall

Ive used what were the Premium grade Motorcraft brake pads from Ford, but I don't know the excat line reference.

I may have got diddled over the price, but I sure didn't have heating issues. We only did 8500 km a year, but half of it was downhill for the first 15 minutes of the 8.5 km drive to work, an avaerage of 34 km an hour, and a drop from 320 m to 15 m above mean sea level!
