break in with diesel oil?

just got my 200 back from the machinist (finally!) and he said he'd heard that it was best to use a light duty diesel oil for the first 100 miles because sulphurs and other additives have been removed from modern oils and they help to break in non-roller cams. any ideas/suggestions on this? he didn't really know what types/brands to recommend. is someone pulling his leg or does this make sense?

thanks!

He is not pulling your leg, this is actually very good advice. The SM rated oils which are required for the newest cars have had the ZDDP addative reduced severely or eliminated entirely. The ZDDP supposedly hurts the catalyctic converters.

The diesel rated oils still hav it though, at least for now. I used Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 for startup of my fresh 300 this spring. I put in an extra quart and then changed the filter at about 50 miles. I didn't change the oil until 2000 miles, then switched to synthetic.

Diesel rated oil is a very good choice to run in your 200 full time if you can find the weight that you want to run. In a warmer climate I would be happy with the Delo 15w-40 but I wanted a lighter oil for these cold morning startups we are enjoying here in northern Idaho now and for the next 8 months.

Yup, use Diesel oil - not only to break it in, but after that. There's nothing magic about Diesel oils, just the detergent and (more importantly for us) the high-pressure lube additive packages. Like Lazy JW said, gasoline engine oils have had their high-pressure lube removed, since most/all modern engines use roller cams and don't need it. Lots of discussion about this online, lots of high-dollar engine builders were having brand new cams/lifters wiped out in brand new engines.

I've been using Rotella for a year in both my old car engines, and I just used it to break in a 425-hp Buick V8 as well. It's good stuff.

What's a real bummer is that apparently, sometime in 2007 even the diesel oils are going to get their high-pressure lube reduced.

Do the new Synthetic oils do better then the diesel oil? We used to put in mineral oil in airplanes after changing a cylinder. anyone have thoughts on that?

8) even the new synthetic oils have the zddp package reduced, including some of the diesel rated oils. remember that even diesels will be getting catalytic converters soon.

Anybody know of a zddp additive? I've heard that even GM's EOS has had it reduced. Looks like a marketing opportunity...

8) you still add more zddp with the gm eos package, so it would be a good way to go.

I've been using standard 10w30 in my 200. If I switched to diesel now, what would happen?

8) nothing bad.

Would it be a good idea, or would it not affect anything?

The reduction in EP (Extreme Pressure) additives seems to mostly affect the cam lobes and lifters. If you are running a bone stock setup it is unlikely that you would see any real benefit from using diesel rated oil. However, if you have any kind of performance cam that has higher spring pressures than stock it would be a good plan.

One thing for certain, it won't cause any harm.

STP has Zincdiphosphate (zddp) in it. Don't pour in the whole bottle, just a few ounces.

Valvoline Synthetic Oil Treatment, or VSOT as it's referred to on bobistheoilguy.com. is highly regarded.
The other oil additive, now discontinued, but available at closeout prices at Big Lot stores is CD2 Street Legal Oil Boost (SLOB). If you find some, send me a few bottles, I'll pay. Can't get any of this stuff in Canada.

same in Europe.

Ever since the twin towers went down five years ago and they locked up all the AAFES and PX along with the US bases, not a single civillian without a military ID card got their hands on a can of STP.
One more reason to keep the "support our troops"-sticker on my trunk lid.
