c4 on to alloy head crossflow. flexplate troubles.

Hi I am in the process of assembleing my c4 (c9) auto, 86 da. e2 alloy head crossflow combo in my cortina.

Ive hit a wall trying to connect the c4 to the engine as the torque converter bolts are hitting the sandwich plate when we tighten up the bolts between the engine and gearbox. (with the bolts done up only nip tight there is just enough clearance, like 1mm).

and I am using the proper c4 flexplate (the one on the right hand side) on post #14

any help is much appreciated.
 
It may be that you don't need the sandwich plate there. I've pulled apart some factory-original BW35/six combos with no plate - just the inspection cover. Would that help?

Also - got the slightly shorter auto flexplate bolts? Doesn't make a difference in terms of your application problem above, but penetration into (right through) the crank is maybe a potential issue.

it has emerged that the problem was caused by the converter not being fully locked home in the auto.
 
nah wasnt ever running so its ok. we noticed the problem before we put the motor and box in thankfully.
 
Any Ford gearbox with a 'C' in front of it is a beggar to engage properly.You can physically get everything in, then it falls short of engaging when the bellhousing and torque ocnverter bolts are done up, and that makes everyone around you laugh there asses off. Sames goes with the BW 35.

The only other problem is that some of the early manual trans bolts are often too long for the automatics, and you pierce the rope or neoprene or dog turd seal, and oil drops out and you then have to do an insitu replacement.

Sounds like you got it sorted.

Hay addo, what's RS? I thought that was a Ford term. Enlighten me, mate!
