C4 torque convertor flexplate probs

Hey guys
I have a C4 which was orginally off a 302 windsor put on the 6 cylinder bellhousing and the convertor sticks out past the bellhousing. I think it is too much for me to be able to get it modified or do anythin with. is this usually the way it is?
have i done something wrong?
it is located in as far as it will go.

It's not in all the way.

Did you check the inner shaft splines matched on both ends?

Then you turn it so the converter slots in once, keep turning while gently pushing and the second step will fall into place.

it sits in properly now you were right.
now if i push it in too far it locks up. if i pull it out a couple of mill it turns freely but if i push it in too far then it locks up.
I had to change the bellhousing to the 6 cylinder one and while i was doing that the part where the 6 cylinder bellhousing bolts too cam out a bit so i put it back to where it was and then bolted up the bellhousing. would that have stuffed something up?

Well, where does it sit when correctly mounted? It may not be 100% jammed in there when the converter is bolted to its flexplate. Check that first, then we'll worry about the pump.

64xm,
You havent damaged anything. With the torque converter pushed all the way in, without the transmission fitted. It will jam up.
With the trans fitted, the torque converter sits further forward against the drive plate.
Try bolting up the trans to the engine. Refit rear trans mount, put hand through starter opening and the torque converter should still turn a bit.
The drain plug will restrict alot of movement.

thats really good to find out. thanks for the help guys. the convertor sits in nicely. I now have another question and that is do 6cylinder flexplates have different internal diametres to go around the convertor?

Hullo,
I may be wrong but I was always told the borg warner drive plate only has holes for the torque converter bolts, the c4 plate has extra holes for the drain plug.
The external diametre of both drive plates is the same due to the starter drive gear is the same for all ford six cylinder engines.
That is with the six cylinder engines. Coz im using a drive plate from an xd in my log powered xm, borg warner of course.

The c-series flex has a larger "internal" diameter and larger pcd for the converter studs. The B/W flex has the ringear mounted differently which reduces the inside measurement.
