Anyone got a recommendation for a cam grinder?

It's for the Merc 470, tried Reed no response to e-mail.

Need a street performance regrind, say 250 - 260 degree.

Fully open for suggestion, recommendations and advise.

The head is Edelbrock Performer, valve train will be full boogie.

Crower has a skunk works where thet do all sorts of things which aren't catalogued. (ph.) 619-669-7261 (fax)619-669-0856

Clay Smith does tons of custom work, and very little else.

8) give clay smith the specs for your engine, and tell them what you are looking for, and they will grind you a cam that you will be happy with.

I have berry cams do all my cam work on my 300 six for racing they grind cams for anything.

Just had a custom street grind cam ground by Comp Cams to match my ls1 head. It has 285 deg at .006 and 241 deg. at .050 and .617 lift, cost $200.00, fast delivery too. Good people for strange requests like mine.

Sent a bunch or e-mail, can't call because I'm in Nigeria right now.
American Cam replied the same day, the others didn't.

AmerCam was familar with the engine, said they could regrind 280 degrees at 0.050 with 0.575 lift and 108-110 centerline with no adverve effect in geometry or or adjustment. With out welding.

$75, says he done other Merc 470, at this price even for a 4cylinder he must have a master cam to copy. Logic says you don't keep a bad master.

I value SR's recommendation and at that price and having an extra stick, will see what his work looks like, put it in a jig at Procell's and see how accruate. Later proof will be in the dyno.

My above C.Cams ls1 head 300 six $200.00 hydraulic lifter street cam grind required a new cast core for grinding on 108 lobe centers. A new C.Cams core will allow a maximum lobe lift of .370 multiplied by a 1.7 ratio rocker arm yields a max of .629" valve lift. I dont know what shipping cost would be for a regrind core. The delivered specs exceeded those of similar duration hydraulic "roller" grinds available wthout the cost and hastle of roller lifters, guide bars and a billit core. Poor folks have to do things differently I guess.

Can you describe for me what a 470 merc is? Is this the marine 4 cylinder that uses the 460 canted valve heads Ive heard of? Or a 8 cyl desiel? If so it seems that any lobe master for a big block ford could be used. Comp Cams masters are all digitized for their cnc grinders. The masters for my cam actually were originally designed for a big or small block chrysler engine. Like I said, they didnt even laugh at me untill after I hung up the phone.

Nigeria? Are you dodging bullets over there? ( not to be confused with billits)

Banger you missed my other posts in this section about this engine.

Merc 470 is half of a Ford 460; pistons, rods, lifters head all the same.
A 224 ci aluminium block 4 cylinder, am building with an Edelbrock Performer head. It will power a street roadster going to build for wife.

Sounds really cool. Email for Comp Cams is ethopson@compcams.com. Eric Thompson will give you the real skinny. There is a cam requst form on the Comp Cam web site that he will ask you to fill out. Takes about a week for a response.

Thad,
Since your thinking about cam specifications, you need to get hold of the july issue of Popular Hotrodding and read the " be a camshaft expert" article. It gives specific info on chosing lobe centers based on cubic inch per cylinder and overlap based on usage. Writen by David Vizard, he also explains other subjects like rocker ratios and behive springs. Next month, he promises info why cam advance and retard is important to us street freaks. With this information you can call and order your own cam specs instead of a one size fits all deal.
