Cams

G'day all,

Ok, the time has come to change my cam. Currently, I'm thinking the engine is lacking a bit of pep, so I've decided to change the cam, and possibly stall too as a first step towards winning more power.

I've narrowed it down to a choice of two cams; the Crow 14771,
http://www.crowcams.com.au/templates/Catalogue-Falcon6Xflow.shtml
or the Voodoo Stage 2 (possibly Stage IV if I do the stall aswell);
http://www.gasresearch.com.au/productvoodootable.html

The upside on the Crow cam is that it has a smaller valve overlap than anything Voodoo, so if in fact I can get Transport permission to twin turbo the motor, by my reckoning, that'll be the better cam. The voodoo cams were designed by COME, dyno tested to suit propane fuel, and the power range looks promising too.

So, having narrowed it down, what would people reccomend as a cam of choice?

oooo...oooo...ooo
i just rememberd.
i was at chris mills perfromance the other week..
and they had a bargain bin...
and guess what it was full of....
YEP, thats right crane/crow cams to suit the 250 x-flow for $50
quick magnus, get your ass down there.
umm..that is all.

Time for a serious chat...

For a TT application, quite frankly, you are going to be shooting blind to an extent. I have not heard good things about COME. In fact, I would not deal with them.

Step 1: Choose your wheels/tyres.
Step 2: Realistically decide your main use of the car, and what transmission.
Step 3: From that, make an educated guess on final drive ratio.
Step 4: Put your head on the flow bench... No, the car's head!
Step 5: Decide on the fuel type. Dual fuel would not be very good for performance.
Step 6: Contact Ray or Ron at Crow, with these details, and get a cam recommendation. Then up it a few notches. They recommend very conservatively (ie; you could use their pro-street choices for dailies).

Truly sorry to put a little dampener on things, but this procedure will net the best starting point (and may beginner's luck shine upon you! :D ) - buying a cam because it's cheap isn't worth it, IMO. Got your 1.73 woller wockers yet? Go for 3/8" Cr-Mo pushrods, too.

Note well that the new cam will have some specific requirements vis à vis valve springs and retainers. Possibly anti-pumps, too. For a blown application, I'd urge the JP gear drive, or at least the double row timing set.

It all costs, and sooo much, too!

Regards, Adam.

any of those cams left does anyone think i minght have a look after my exam today

cheers smythee

Ok, I've already done a bit of thought regarding the setup, but its good to hear what others think..

Step 1: Choose your wheels/tyres.
ED-EF XR6 16" rims shod with Pierelli rubber, when I scrape the cash together. In the mean time, I'll settle for Cheviot Hurricane rims. Quite probably a set of Firestone F660s, a mate has had good luck with those tyres, and they weren't too dear either.

Step 2: Realistically decide your main use of the car, and what transmission.
Main form of transport, but not exactly daily driver. C4 automatic. 1800 stall preferable, Stage II shift kit.

Step 3: From that, make an educated guess on final drive ratio.
2.77:1 LSD, XE/XF Fairmont Ghia spec. The motor will have more than enough torque to launch 1450kg..

Step 4: Put your head on the flow bench... No, the car's head!
I'll probably do that after I do a mild port and rebuild on the XF head in the shed.. 1.85" EFI Intake, 1.54" exhaust

Step 5: Decide on the fuel type. Dual fuel would not be very good for performance.
The only good thing about the EFI on the XE is the intake manifold, lol. I'll be using a fumigated intake manifold, with a custom 70mm LPG mixer, located downstream of the throttlebody. Not too much restriction, since apparently the XE/XF TBs measure at 73mm.. It'll be straight gas.

Step 6: Contact Ray or Ron at Crow, with these details, and get a cam recommendation. Then up it a few notches. They recommend very conservatively (ie; you could use their pro-street choices for dailies).
Thanks for the tip! I hadn't thought about getting a custom cam ground up!

Got your 1.73 woller wockers yet? Go for 3/8" Cr-Mo pushrods, too.
I've heard I can get the wally wuckers for the crossflow, a direct cleveland interchange, but wouldn't I have to get the rods made up? Or are they also made to suit crossflows aswell?

Note well that the new cam will have some specific requirements vis à vis valve springs and retainers. Possibly anti-pumps, too. For a blown application, I'd urge the JP gear drive, or at least the double row timing set.

Yes, more lift requires stronger springs, to prevent them breaking and / or floating at high RPMs. Anti pump lifters would help me stop trashing my motor too. I know I'll have to change the valvetrain, since the cam will invariably require me to do so. I was thinking about roller lifters, do crossflows allow them to be installed? GTHO Phase III valve springs would work I believe, or some multi-spring aftermarket job would work too, apparently Crow have a decent solution. About driving the cam, I think I'll go gear drive, if I can afford it. Really, a double roller chain will do the trick, I'll just have to check or change it at regular intervals to prevent it from busting on me.

 Hmm... The steep rear ratio is an interesting curl! I can see why you want it, with no overdrive. Will the effective diameter of the rubber change much?

Yes, Clevo roller rockers will drop in. Go for the greatest ratio, thickest stud set. (I think stud sizes are variable.) This will mean a little tapping to fit the threads. Check Parts Peddler, and local trading rags. I have seen them new in box, for $350 at swaps.

Roller lifters are out, I'm afraid. As for the valve springs, the least strong ones that will do the job, are the best to run. This will prolong valve train life. For the pushrods - ask around. I can't think of a specific source. Contact Manley USA if all else fails. Quite affordable! :D

As you are not running high RPMs, a rebuilt stock harmonic, or Ross Street Performer, will do fine.

Buy a degree wheel. Nobody ever has one to borrow. :devilish: Ditto for a good 1" travel dial rig with magnetic base. I love mine.

Also check on the distributor drive gear material for the recommended cam. The lumpier the cam, the more critical this becomes.

Reckon it'll be ready for the weekend? I can hear lollipops unwrapping already... :p

Cheers, Adam.

heh.. It'll be ready a little while after Johnny Howard's contribution comes my way.. still counting down the weeks, lol!

Now you mention it, it might be a wise idea to change the rear to a 2.92:1 with the new rubber. Its just easier to locate good condition 2.77:1 LSD units out of XE/XF fairmont ghias. I guess I'll see how she goes with the 2.77 unit thats in there at the moment.

As for high RPM, I'm going to call it quits at 5000. Not much point buzzing it harder, the stock bottom end wont like that with a pair of snails.. The head doesnt flow all that good anyway, ditto with the rod ratio.

hmm, sounds like its time to start sniping on the Quakka website. I'll have to see if the people of perth are selling any Clevo rockers. I believe they're 1.73:1, do they come in any ratios greater than that?. Tapping new threads should be a piece.

It's milling and tapping on the roller rocker install - a manual mill with a drill chuck will help things along. You can get an easy-fit set, but I'm referring to the 7/16" screw in units.

High ratio is 1.80:1. A clearance check would be worthwhile.

The 2.92 sounds a little more workable. I am wondering about a stallie with a 2200 or so speed, also. This may end up being required.

What's happened to mattXF? Has he gone rice?

Nah, Matts still around..and as far as i know he still has the XF.
I just dont think he comes on the net to often..
I might have to go over to his joint, and tell him to re-register. ;)

-Mike.

hey hey fellas.... wow did ya actually miss me :) all my dumb questions and stuff lol hahahahahahaha

I don't know matt, it seems like you are enjoying the 4cyl's....lol.

What sort of paint scheme are you going for?

Ok, im just going to have to ask..
Silver-bullet, how did u get your pistol in your avatar?...i can only seem to find little faces and bit and pieces, and cant find a place to link to a URL for a pic.

You never mentioned that you were a dole bludger man....lol. Or is that your tax refund?

MixMastaMike,

You have to PM or e-mail you avitar to Jack (mustangsix). All the personalised ones, from board members (like my gun), are actually in the FSP section of the gallery.

Cheers,
Dylan

it was f*****n quick but then i remembered it wasnt a ford and it only had 4 cyliners!! lol....... the other day he wooped the ass of a guy in a VNSS it still musta been cool to turn to him and say "wow my engine is half the size and i still beat ur holden ass" <----- now thats what i woulda said

yeh paint job is the same as i had but... 'good' 2 tone black and white.... too much werk to change the colour and its already expensive enough.. cant wait for it though, pannelbeater found a shit load of rust and bog but hes fixing it all properly 4 me woohoo!

-matt-

mike, any cruises must be done once my car is painted and a few other small things are done.... dont want another yellow bastard ;)

Race a 4cyl up a hill, and you will win every time without trying.

Kinda sucks though, I woudn't bother trying to race against a 308, as my engine is completly stock, so I save myself the embarresment. Could you imagine how badly that rice would woop me....My bullets will always fly faster though....heh heh.

All you Perth boys, if a cruise was organised...how many of you would attend?
No use me/someone organising one and meeting myself in a carpark..lol.
yer, just give us a idea?!

-Mike

yeh mike i aint been on one yet, but id be up for it....... providing my car was ready to go and stuff  heh heh heh

Dude, when I get my yellow off, We'll have to have a FSP cruise for sure.. All 6 Cylinder vehicles are going to be more than welcome :)

You never mentioned that you were a dole bludger man....lol. Or is that your tax refund?

Dylan nah, I've found an easier way yet - Log into NetBank, hold down Shift and type in 'f-u-n-d'
