carb pop

Got a question. Just got my old car back about a month ago and got it running a couple weeks ago. 65 stang, 200 3spd. When I start the car, it will idle all day long. It will take a slow push on the accelerator, but anything more and loud pops come echoing out of the carb. Car has a new: battery, coil, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I rebuilt the carb, new fuel filter and fuel pump gushes fuel(don't ask how I. Know). Its been awhile since I worked on old cars and am certain this is something simple I am just forgetting.

Is the pump suppose to shoot a stream or spray? And buddy still has the chiltons, you happen to know what timing is suppose to be set at?

Set timing up to around 10 or 12 BTDC Yes this is higher than what the manuals call for but the motor likes it. As for the carb. It should spray a good stream from the discharge nozzle. If not you need to check out the accelerator pump. My bet is that you have an accelerator pump issue

Vacuum issue in the dizzy especially if its a load o?
Mechanical bind if its not a load o?
Dwell problem if its points.
Vacuum leak causing it to run lean.
Float problem " " " " "
Fuel delivery problem " " " " "
Bad fuel?
Restriction in the exhaust like bent pipe or critters?

Cool, thanks for all the ideas. Guess I have some things to check tonight. It's no fun having a major dumbass attack.

Did a compression test today (totally forgot to do one before) and cylinders 1,4,5,6 are 150, give or take a psi. Cylinders 2 and 3 are 45 and 50 respectively. I am of the opinion that its a head gasket issue, blown between the two. Or could it be valves outta wack. Hmmm. Back to the drawing board. Keep you posted.

Probably the headgasket.

But it could be the valves, or something else too - but whatever it is, the head has to come off.

bummer.

LOL no bummer. Not now that I drank a couple beers and calmed down and put things in perspective. I knew I was gonna have to pull the head. Oh well. Let the fun start. Thanks again. Brian

haha hell yeah. Put a few down and tear that fucker apart.

At least now you know what was wrong with it. Just think how much better it is going to run once you get it fixed.

Sure enough, blown head gasket between 2 and 3. Gonna have lots of things to look at while the head is off.
