Carb question

HI ALL
On the carb I have on this 84 ranger 4 banger, has a sylnoid that is attached to the bowl and has a wire coming out of it.... What does this sylnoid do?
I'm trying to get a good carb for my 200 and this carb is new If I can hook up that sylnoid to work with my applacation?

It might be an idle stop solenoid...just a guess though

84 would be the feedback (computer) vintage. The carb would have had a TPS (throttle position sensor), MCS (mixture control solenoid), and some form of ilde speed control that was usually external and pushed on the throttle linkage. I dont know on that ford (or was it mazda then?) how the rest of the carb worked but on the GM's the solenoid acted on the primary metering rods which were originally vacuum controlled. With the solenoid not working it went to full rich which was enough to notice in your mileage if you had a properly working vacuum one or computer control. The control was typically less than 10%. IF the fords didnt have any variable mixture to begin with I dont think there would be any difference as long as you could still change or adjust the jets and or rods. Maybe you could get one and take it apart to see if could adapt the solenoid to some sort of manual screw for easy tuning?

That was the prob the guy was having... Way rich.. he didn't or forgot to plug that sylnoid in and ran it and it ran way rich and killed the motor... anyway the motor died.. head gasket I'm thinking as when you try to start it smoke comes out the side of the block by the dizzy... and it cranks weird like the belt went as well....
