Hey there everybody......am interested in upgrading my carb to increase performance. Right now I have a holley single barrel on there but am not sure what one. I dont really know if it is stock or not.
I am running my 65 coupe w/ 200 c.i. with a t-5 and the pertronix coil and ignitor set. Would like to boost performance without sacrificing too much fuel economy but there is wiggle room since i am making around 25 mpg w/ the new t-5.
I would also like to keep cost down. Any questions, comments, and suggestions are appreciated. I have the the ford falcon six performance handbook but can't really digest the info enough to be worthwhile. This will also be a temporary upgrade until the new head comes out and I can pour some money into it.

Howdy Back:

Be aware that your stock '65 Load-a-matic distributor requires a carb with a Spark Control Valve (SCV) to send the appropriate signal to the vacuum advance system. If you change to a '69 or later carb you will need to change your distributor too.

An Autolite 1101, used on full sized Ford cars from 1963 & 64 with a 223, has the SCV, looks identical to a stock '65 Autolite 1100, but flows an additional 25 cfm. It will hook up to your stock linkage, fuel line, air cleaner.

A Holley carb is not stock for '65. Does the Holley carb have the side mounted glass bowl? IF so, it is from earlier versions of the 144 or 170 engine- both down on cfm as compared to a stock '65 Autolite 1100.

You will need to taper the top of the carb adapter to accomodate the larger butterfly valve of the 1101.

Sorry to hear the Handbook is not helpful to you.

Adios, David.

1st......I have no idea what type of holley carb it is..if in fact it is a holley carb. I have uploaded some pics here http://photos.blue-odyssey.com/

The photo with the red written highlights/describes the inscriptions visible on the carb.

I appreciate any help and figuring out what is going on on top of my engine :)

2nd....I love the Handbook...just the carb section was not too useful since I have no idea what carb I have and what is the best way to go for upgrading.

Thanks,

Matt

The carb appears to be a generic version of the Holley 1946. This carb was used in a number of different applications and was even available as a one-size-fits-all factory replacement for some applications. The only way to decern what it is and how much it might flow is to measure the diameter of the throttle bore and venturi. If it is comparable to the stock Autolite 1100 or even the 1101 there is no point in going that way.

If it is the generic, service parts Holley, it has some advantages over the Autolites too. THese carbs are simplier and easier to work on then the '80s 1946s used on Fox platform vehicles. They are less encumbered with electronic, thermal, and vacuum feedback sensors.

It doesn't appear to have a SCV. If it doesn't it is not compatible with your stock Load-a-matic distributor vacuum advance system. Given your mileage, you are likely getting full vacuum advance all the time. Do you know what your initial advance is set at?
