Carter YFA Metering Rod?

So which way makes it rich or lean? I rebuilt it and set it according to mike's carberator page, hold pump all he way down and turn unil the metering rod touches the floor of the carb, then turn an addition full turn clockwise. I think it's running a little rich, so counter clockwise for lean? I'm getting a little stumbling at low speed and at idle while in drive at a full stop.

I think you may have to go to a smaller jet size talk to mike he know his stuff on carter he should be able to help you i have the same issue a small stumble off the line when pressing the gas if i do it really light then it dont but any other time it stumbles.

 It just dawned on me that I didn't check the jet beyond the threads and that it "looked" the same when I did the rebuild. I double checked all the gaskests, watched Mikes video 4-5 times, inspected the check ball.... all of it! But did I bother to think the jet size could be different??? :bang:

That's what truely great about this site, you throw something out there and somebody comes along and gives you a love smack right accross the face! First thing in the morning I'm going to pull it out and check it against the old one (I kept it!) I did look at them side by side but I didn't actually measure them.... I'm such a dunce....... I really hope that solves the problem, it's been driving me nuts!

Thanks!

according to mikes page the size should be stamped on rim of the jet, mike has a huge list of jets you can get.

I took it all apart again, the needle stamp is 75/1984 and the jet stamp is 120/604 . I reset the needle and put a new fuel filter on it. I'll drive it this week and see what happens...

Finally found the problem...

I pulled the carb out, reset the needle, inspected the jet under the microscope, no problems. I put everything back together and I still had the problem. I decided to go back through each component again, from the carb outward. Started with each vacuum line (they are all new) double checked them for leaks. I bypassed the 3-Way Solenoid (smog vacuum switch) and it ran fine, no hesitation, no stumbling. I must have checked that switch 3 times.... I must have caught it just right! So I know it's the switch or the temp switch that controls it. Either way, I've run the car all week after I reset the timing, idle speed, choke duration and fast idle speed with the vacuum line rerouted bypassing the switch (carb to distributer directly). Purrs like a kitten!

hmm well that solve you're problem i still have my stumble i dont have that switch on my setup just goes right to the Dizzy, mine will stumble off idle when i give it some gas it dont have to be very hard, if i ease it down it wont do it.

I found that the following guide works pretty well, I 've used it several times to help diagnose issues. It might just do the trick. Also, I have another one at home, I'll post that one later tonight. http://classicinlines.com/troubleshooting.asp#8

I had a lot of problems with oil fouling, luckily it was just old valve seals. Once I replaced those the engine ran much better!
