about to buy a celica 5spd kit for my 250 2V.... it came out of an xb which had a crossflow motor in it, but the kit should still bolt upto my 2V right?? as far as i know the block bellhousing pattern is the same?!

also, would it be a cable clutch or would it be hydrolic?

anyone who has run this box would like to hear from you on how they go

cheers

There are no worries fitting it. The 250 never changed the bellhousing from 1971 till 1993!

The RWD Celica, 1972 to 1986, 1974 to early pre 1995 Hilux, front engine Tarago 1984 to before 1990, Oz assembled Corana Avanti, Supra till 1985 ran the 'steel case 5-speed' gearbox. My friend Richard has an EFI TE Cortina with one, and it is fairly good. Main issue is what coversion you use. If Delow, CRS, or Marks, its fine, but if you use the stock falcon bellhousing, they are a compromise.

They do blow top gear if used under any load. In things like light FE Holdens with 283's, they blow. There used to be a BMW full roller conversion to strenghten bits in the 80's. The 5th gear is just an overdrive on the ancient iron case Crown gearbox, so it has been around a long, long time!

The steel case Celica gearbox is certainly inferior to the Top loader and, to a lessor extent, the single rail. It is way better than any of the local BW 4-cylinder Sigma, Commodore or Falcon 3.3 5-speeds.

The next 1986 on Supra gained the better R-series gearboxes. The latest Hi Lux runs a box similar to the RZ case, but has awefull ratios. These are the ones to use.

I think any of the Toyotas are cable clutched, but its easy to change between the types. The XD-XG cable can be used if needed.
