Hi everyone,

I changed the cylinder head on my 68 200 this weekend. I put on a 77 flat top log head that I got from mraley. Nice cylinder head. I used a fel pro gasket and a new 160 degree thermostat. Torqued in 3 stages one hour apart to a final of 75 lbs. I'm still running the stock bump stick. I have dura spark and msd. I'm using his H/W 5200 because it's been jetted for the engine. The temp sending unit from my old head would not fit but I had one from another flat top head that I used. Before the change it did not run hot ever. Does anyone have any ideas?

By the way it's a big improvement over the 68 head with H/W 5200 straight from Stovebolt.

I know of one nameless person who managed to install a thermostat back-to-front... Got that one covered, Bob?

Is the different sender unit your now using compatible with your temp gage? It may give a different resistance and your not actually overheating. Compare the resistance of the old & new sending units. You may have to put them both into some fairly hot water to know for sure.

Addo,

As embarrassed as I am to say it, you may have hit the nail on the head. I'll check when I get home tonight. If you are though I will be happy because that will be a easy fix.

Replace the TSU if that doesn't do it. Could just be a bad one. They can be bad off the shelf new.

BTW, that nameless person wasn't me this time!

Everyone,

Let's just say I'm very happy and the car is not running hot anymore and leave it at that. LOL

Thanks for all the suggestions, you guys have figured out my mess up yet again.

I was thinking Northen Hemisphere when I did it... At least the excuse seemed worth trying!

Sounds deserving of a nickname like mine.

okay, same problem, maybe same solution, how do i tell when i take it apart? the manuals don't have clear info on which way the thermostat is supposed to be installed. i even thought i made an intellegent guess when putting it together.....

Kiwis put them in backwards for years. Geeze addo, works really well for picking up cheap Fords...you tell the owners to reverse the thermostat and if that doesn't work offer them a cheap price to 'take if off there hands'.

nosnevets werdnA neaD.
