Howdy Matt and All:
What are you working on???
1st- About $50- Buy a shop manual and read it thoroughly.
2nd- Tools, Compression tester, vacuum guage, timing light, etc. $- depends on what you have- Start with a good basic assessment to determine what your greatest needs are.
3rd- Assuming basic oil, filter and lube are in place, Start with a good electrical and fuel system tune up. New plugs, points & condenser, cap, carb rebuild kit, filters and a can of chemical fuel system cleaner. About $70.
4th- FREE- Now that you know how things work- sorta;
*Add 5 more degrees to the initial advance, over stock specs.
*Gap your new plugs at .040" instead of .035".
*Make sure your gas pedal is opening the carb butterfly all the way.
*Make sure that your tires are aired up to the Max rating, have it
aligned ($) and wheels balanced.
*Dejunk and unload anything that you don't need to be carrying around.
Lighter is better.
Enjoy the trip.
Adios, david
