hi,
im considering buying a XB falcon sedan 250 3 speed colum shift manual, the motor needs a rebuild so i reckon it would be easier swapping to another 250 with a 4 speed single rail floor shift.
what parts would i need?
any other info would be great
cheers matt

its an easy swap with the single rail as the shifter simply bolts into the hole on the geaerbox and sticks up through the hole in the trans tunnel (presuming there is a plate which screws off on there?)all mounts will be ok so there isn't much you need but the new combo.once your done just unhook the old linkages from the coloum manual and turf them.if you change to a crossflow the excelarator cable may need to be longer and exhaust should bold up as long as it doesn't have extractors are a pre xflow and xflow have different design.

well, if you go with a pre x-flow 250, all you'd have to do is cut a hole in the trans tunnel to accomodate the shifter and possibly get a floor hump from a similar era car that will bolt on covering the hole. (I recently tried to use an XD floor hump on my XW T5 conversion, but it seems that the XD's had a larger diametre trans tunnel than the XW, but I am not sure if XB's would be alright). The single rail had the same bellhousing as the toploader, except for the location of the mounting stud holes which secure it to the box. One hole is in the same position on both, but the rest need to be redrilled. (you will need a toploader housing as they had the hydraulic clutch the same as what you'd have). Otherwise you'll have to install a cable clutch pedal from a later model (XC/D) If you go for a x-flow however, you'd have to use the accelerator assembly from an XC/D as well, as they are cable setups, unlike the linkages on XB's. Hope this gives you a rough idea. Cheers, Tony

your 3 speed bellhousing should bolt up to the 4 speed as there both borg warner this means you can use the original clutch set up (clutch plate/pressure plate/flywheel/hyd clutch).tc/td cortina toploaders have a cable clutch set up,i have 1.

the 3 speed will bolt up to the 4 speed... if you bore the centre where the driveshaft comes through....Toploaders and single rails had a larger centre diamater than the old 3 speed. ( I know, cause I went through this trauma with my XW ute. all I had was 3 speed bellhousings, and whilst I could have redrilled the mounting holes, I had no way of reboring the centre hole... So I bought a toploader with hydraulic setup bellhousing for $30 at a wrecker and just redrilled the mounting holes. EASY... but I thought the cable clutch only came in with the XC/D series of vehicles.....from 77???? on.

ok i didnt know about the centre hole,im sure i have used a 3 speed clutch plate/pressure plate in a single rail as it came out of an xy with a 3 speed.cortina's had cable clutch i have had around 25 of them.
