Have a siezed waterpump in the XF. I was driving to work last week, it snapped a fan belt. Alt light came on, temp rose very quickly. I babied it home, put a new fan belt on without bothering to check the waterpump.
Net result is I drove to work again yesterday, belt started slipping half way between work and kalgoorlie, so I just turned the stereo up to drown out the sound. Started losing power 5km from work, so I popped the clutch, it stalled instantly. Only just rolled into the carpark at work, I was not going to leave it at the side of the road - seen too many cars picked to the bones within 12 hours out this way. Knocked off work, hopped in, turned the key, and theres no load on the starter whatsoever. great.

But, I've done some phoning around on site, and I've located an EL XR6 Auto wreck to be had for $cheap. Too cheap to pass up, $1000. Not original motor, it has the EF-style distributorless ignition system. Looks like I'll be putting an XR6 motor into the XF :D

Off the top of my head, this is what I'll need:

T5 bellhousing
pilot bearing
XG/XH engine mounts
computer (Wolf3D EMS???? I dont want to have to muck around with SmartLock on an exchange computer).

Will I need to add an OHC flywheel and clutch to the list? Or will Crossflow bolt on?
Will the XF fuel pump be good enough for the OHC? or will the EL fueltank fit?
Will the crossflow's T5 pilot shaft be compatible with the OHC motor?

Thanks in advance fellas!

Flywheels are same as far as i know except OHC sixeshave bigger clutch.
Your OHC is manual just drop the whole thing into your XF, you may have an issue with sump clearance, but crossflow sump might bolt on anyway, starters are all the same.
XG utes have OHC in XF style body, XH has ea typr front end.
Wolf will work with some fiddling with looms etc.'
your XF is efi? if so then fuel pump is probably ok.
use the standard exhaust manifold theyre just fine.
others have done this and dont seem to, have trouble.

this is what ur trying to do
Tickford6-In-XE.jpg

now thats a EF 4.0L in a XE it uses EA Mounts with a EF motor and a T5
lots of people use the EA Radiator. also.
the XG Yoots have a different radiator support panel.. to XD/E/F

loads of people think everything is a str8 swap over.. but its not.

theyre is a heap of photos of this car on my site. shows engine mounts.. and all that kinda rubbish
http://www.ford-cortina.net/pix/cars/Tickford6-In-XE/

and if u still having trouble fitting the engine... then keep trying
because An EL motor fits into a Cortina no worries and that needs a different sump :P

ps.. my Clutch for my car is a EL Xr8 Clutch.. thats on a 250 Flywheel.. with the extra holes re-drilled to hold it on there :)

Thats exactly what I'm about to do. Thanks for the tips fellas. I can tell this is gonna be expensive, I'm budgeting $1500 for the swap, not including donor car.

Out of interest, how did you drive the ignition on the XE? Or what sort of EFi computer did you use on the corty? That doesnt look like LPG..

with the xe/xf cars.. a lot of people need to swap the entire steering column over form a XG/XH yoot.. i dunno why.. maybe its due to the electrics and ignition sytsem

the corty isnt mine but my mates got one with a ED Xr6 engine in it also.
and uses the standard steering column.. and same with the white corty.. standard column... dun ask me about the electrics setup tho coz thats one of the small obsticles that u need to get around.

all up it owes him $10,000+ so be carefull with ya budget

i grew up in Kal.. its boomed huge since i left in 94

good luck.

Thanks Tim but its actually an EL 4.0 in an XD. EA mounts on original base mounts- don't let anyone convince you that XG bases are needed.
Plus I've kept the serpentine setup, it clears everything beautifully. A little bit of fabricating is required for rad mounts but easy. Use an EF/L radiator and fans, not XG. You can use XG high pressure p/s line and keep your box. If you mount the header tank on the drivers side you can use the original outlet from the centre of the radiator tank. I had to mount mine where you see it because I've got an AU circuit breaker/relay box just in front of the right hand shocker tower. In hindsight, I should have spent some extra time on the wiring and swapped them around. The water feed to the bottom of the header is through the brass fitting you can see on the lower thermostat housing. Not ideal, but it works for now.
Xflow sump will NOT bolt on but its not an issue unless like myself, you have a factory sump gaurd. In which case you will have to modify your sump. If you don't have a sump gaurd, you will have plenty of clearance if you space your stabaliser bar down.
Spigot bush/bearings are the same.
Use an XR flywheel if you can find one or AU. They have 254 mm clutch and they are 6 bolt mounted AND dowelled.
Ignition on mine is XE Bosch electronic but don't even think about it unless your good with a lathe and have plenty of spare dissys to sacrifice for donor parts.
All up my conversion cost less than a grand, and thats including the price of the motor. It was already T5 and I went straight gas to keep it simple and cheap to run, because this car is my daily driver.
I'll get some current more detailed photos up if your interested.
