64 falcon w/ 78 200 six. i was checking clearences during install of my new d.u.i. distributor, end play was within spec .030, while checking for dist. bottom out i came up with .003 clearence.(play) i bought a moroso shim kit w/ .030, .060, and .100 shims. the .030 that i used measured out at .034 even using the thinnest shim i have .006 gap between the dist. gear and the thrust face. this was checked w/ the dist. hold down tightened to see if the nylon shim would compress. can anyone tell me how much play there should be in an installed dist. i was told .003 is too little but the gear is suppose to ride on the thrust face. any advice would be apprieciated.

.003 is okay. As long as the gear doesnt hit the bottom you should have no problems. When I put my DUI in my 81 200, I had close to .003 clearance and have had no issues with it so far. But if your getting around that with the hold down tightened, no problems.

i believe i may have found the problem, there is a shoulder protruding(which is part of the shaft that has not been machined) below the dist. gear .021 wide and about .027 long. when you slide the dist. in the block it goes in until the shoulder hits the thrust face holding the bottom of the dist. gear off the thrust face. the specs say that gear is suppose to ride on the thrust face.... possible assembly or machining error?????

I would definitely say a machining error. Either contact mike at CI or DUI for a replacement. Or save your time and have it turned on a lathe to get rid of that.
