Well, I finally got to make some progress today on the 200. I've been waiting for the cam degreeing kit that Mike passes around as a loaner to his cam customers. It came yesterday, and I had the box opened in about three seconds! The kit consists of a degree wheel, a dial indicator instrument, two solid lifters a cup type pushrod and a training video. The training video is EXCELENT! It steps you through the process in clear cut stages. George, the Clay Smith guuy who did the video is also the person who has designed the CSC cams that Mike sells.
For the last couple weeks my son-in-law has been on me to just leave everything set at zero and start building the engine. Boy am I glad that I didn't listen to him! When I ran through the degreeing process several times, I consistantly came up with numbers that said that the cam was in at 8* retarded. I even watched the video through two more times to make sure that I was setting things up right. I was shooting for a 2* advance, so that meant I was 10* off my target! The lobe center was almost perfect at a consistant 111.75* (the cam is a 264 112*). Even using the keyway on the dual roller timing set with the max advance it put me right at zero advance. What I finally did was to advance the cam gear one tooth and set the keyway at zero to see where that put me. With that setup, now the numbers said that the cam was now in at 10* advanced. So, I used the 8* retard keyway on the crank gear, and sure enough, perfect at 2* advance.
After this experience, I'll NEVER trust a default setting on a cam again!
Here's what the setup looks like:
Next step: Paint!!!
