Demon carb and Clifford adapter too tall :(

Well, my Clifford adapter came today and I excitedly did a test fit with the Demon carb on my manifold (original adapter removed). The little extension at the top of the carb has about 0 clearance to my hood (didn't have any playdough, but did have some 1/2" foam, which it compressed when I carefully closed the hood. Granted, I haven't yet filed away the adapter to clear the throttle mechanism, but that will probably only give me 1/8" max. Since I didn't have gaskets installed, the 1/8" I gained will probably be taken up by around half or so. So bottom line, there's no way the 2.18" high, 14" diameter air cleaner I ordered will work.

So now I've got some options to consider:

1) Have adapter milled (looks like the MAX I could gain is 0.25", maybe less than that), hoping that I can find an ultra low profile cleaner.

2) Go ahead and bolt everything together to see how it runs, and order a hood scoop/or hood with scoop when I can.

Anything I'm not considering, that I should?

(BTW, I'm not thrilled that I have to figure out how to offset the throttle linkage 90 degrees, but at least I've seen others do that and can get some ideas from photos I've seen here.)

Thanks so much for any help/advice!!!!

James

Not sure how much you'd gain, but have you looked at your motor mounts to make sure everything's at the rear/bottom of their slots?

(1) One of the members of this forum offers custom motor mounts that place the engine lower ion the bay, (2) direct mount carb to head.

The heck with cliffords adapter!

get yourself a nice piece of laminated wood, make a half-inch spacer out of it, soak it in tranny oil, and mount the sucker directly on the log.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions!

Lowering the engine isn't a good option for me - my old Clifford dual headers drag too often as it is (hope to replace them with FSPP ones some day).

I found a 6.5" Mr. Gasket air cleaner that is very low profile....thinking it may rub the hood, but if I'm lucky there will be a frog's hair between the cleaner and the hood. The filter element fits snugly around the Demon carb flange, so I don't even think I need the lower half of the cleaner assembly (saves a 1/4" to a 1/2" I think).

Hopefully, I'll have some time tomorrow and can bolt everything together for a fit test (maybe even run it, but with no throttle linkage yet).

If this setup hits the hood, then I can have the adapter milled a little to give some clearance...

James

The more times I read this, the more I realize what a great idea it is.
Would you glue the wood together yourself, and what type of glue would you use? Does it matter? Would an old table-top/butcher block kind of thing work?
I know you're a great artist, how 'bout a picture? :D
I am really interested in doing this, since now that it's spring I have access to a shop out at the lake. And a carb on shelf!

Well it *did* fit - and I've got it running pretty good, too (now I gotta read the instructions to learn how to adjust it, lol). :)

Gonna start a new post with a pic, since the subject's wrong here and it *wasn't* too tall - just super close.

Oh, to clear the choke linkage at the top of the carb (just inside the flange), I did have to use the base of the Mr. Gasket air cleaner...haven't checked with playdough or anything yet, but I'm guessing I have about NO clearance (but it's not pushing up on the hood, thank goodness)!

James:

with a carb assembly too high, the air cleaner stud usually is the first that will dent your hood.

how are your engine rubber mounts? old and brittle like mine?

Jack:

I´d take beech plywood; over here its commonly used for workbenches, staircases and window sills.

If I couldn´t get any laminated wood anywhere but had a press, I'd make an 1V-spacer from sawn veneer, red or white beech, and epoxy resin, but thats in theory.

Adam will probably chime in on this subject?

Hi Simon,

I countersunk the stud to help a little, maybe...if I dent the hood, then I'll have the adapter milled I reckon. :)

Most likely, they're old and brittle too.

Thick phenolic resin sheet is that much easier to find in the US; it'd be my first choice for a DIY adaptor. "Buche" is a nice timber and too good for sundry applications. I don't like much IKEA use of it, though.
