I went to a car show the other day in a convoy and was later told that at certain times I had black smoke coming out of the exhaust.
I believe this problem is 1) carb or 2) dist. advance related or 3) both.
I have a 200ci w/ rebuilt (by Tomco) Autolite 1100 carb.
Rebuilt distributor (points).
Trans is 3.03 on the column.
I have noticed that at times during acceleration (any gear) I loose power and hear sputter. I release the accelerator and then reaccelerate and then it does not sputter and feels fine with ample power. I am assuming that this is caused by the distributor not advancing enough, thus causing black smoke.
Why would this be? I have adjusted and readjusted the springs and weights and washers. Vaccuum appears normal.
I have also noticed that my carb is leaking a small ammount of fuel. I am assuming this has to do with the seals needing replacement, which is pretty lousy considering it is a rebuilt unit. Would a seal failure cause the mix to be out of whack enough to run rich, thus creating the black smoke?
Again, it appears the black smoke is only during certain times, and I would imgine it only occured during acceleration because at idle she is fine.
I have more investigating to do, but thought I would pick your brains as well.
Thanks for any ideas...
