Difficult starting but once it's started it runs beautifully

I find this to be a odd situation:

I keep my car outside under a car cover and with all of the rain the past few weeks in CA, moisture must have gotten into the dizzy or something because for a while the Stang wouldnt fire at all when cranking it over. So I pushed it into the garage and threw the hood up and aimed a fan on the engine. After a few hours, it dried out enough to fire up and run. Ever since then though, it has been really reluctant to start, winding up but never turning over or firing. It always eventually starts, but it takes a few tries, and once it does, it runs smooth as ever, like nothing had happened.

Could this still mean that there is moisture in the ignition system even though everything, including inside the dizzy cap, is visibly dry, I can't figure it out.

Here is a link to a sound clip of what's going on.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks,
Spence

Sounds like the starter to me. You can hear it start to engage with the flywheel and then spin free. Just when the engine starts you can hear that there is no free spin in the starter.

Listen to your sound clip again. You will hear that change in the starter itself.

Good luck, Ric.

I asked my dad who is a retired mechanic says you need the bendix* replaced in the starter which is the started drive hope that helps, Tommy

*not sure if thats how you spell it.

I agree. The bendix spring in the starter is getting weaker so it is not staying engaged long enough to start the engine. Usually it's just best to buy a new/rebuilt starter as it's likely other components in the starter (electrical contacts, brushes, etc) are worn too, just not yet to the point of failure.

great guys, thanks alot for the advise. A starter seems like a relatively cheap thing to replace.

What would I do without this place???

hmm well you could keep trying to start your car till it wont start then take it somewhere to get scr..... i mean taken advantage of... or at least thats what seems to happen here in florida...
