digging out a tap

Anyone got experience in digging out a broken tap? At least it is only one on the right-top front of the timing chain cover, there is at least 6 more holding it on. Fun, fun, fun. That's what I get for not using grade 5 or better bolts..."just a little more tighter...snap!"

are you digging out a tap or a bolt that broke off? im so confused.. Plus I thought the torque specs on those bolts was terribly low like 3 - 12 in lbs?

Oh yeah, it is the actual tap, and I do know the low torque, it is just the dumb a$$, me, trying to get that extra turn out of it. What about doing a slow drill with a cobalt bit into the broken tap and then easy-out it? It works on stainless. Appreciate.

well as small as those are I would get a pair of left handed drills for it. they are small adn should be somewhat cheap
might wanna try heating the end with a torch to take the temper out of it?

How close is it to the surface? Using a cutting wheel on a dremel tool, you may be able to cut a screwdriver slot in the end. You'll be notching the block, too, but oh well.

Since the I drilled the bolt hole completely through, and nothing I did worked even after I broke the 2nd tap(yes, virginia broke two of them, another after I got the 1st one out), I pulled out the torch rig and waa-la, no more stuck tap. Re-drill and tap and it is all back together again. Thanks for the info fellers.
