I'm going to get an exhaust system for my 65 mustang. I have a 250 in it and I was wondering what would be better dual exhaust or single exhaust

Howdy Stephen:

Welcome to the forum.

"Better" can mean many different things. Are you talking about a better image? Performance? sound? durability? cost? weight? What's your criteria for better?

And the complete exhaust system needs to be considered. Do you have a header or a stock cast manifold? Are you planning to have header in the future? Dual outlet, or single?

What other mods have you done? What do you have planned?

IMHO- duals on an otherwise stock rig add nothing but cost, weight and higher maintainance. If I were in your shoes and needed to repair my current exhaust system, I'd replace it all with a 2" or 2 1/4" single exhaust system, including a turbo type muffler. I'd mount the muffler as far back as possible. This will be a nice noticeable improvement over your stock system, give a nice sound, and be a good foundation for adding a header in the future. Your stock 250 cast exhaust manifold has a 2" outlet. If you were to, at least, match that with the rest of the system, you'd notice a decrease in underhood temp as well.

Again welcome, and enjoy. There is a wealth of information and opinions on here. Take some time to read and study past posts. Learn to use the search tool at the top to take best advantage of past posts.

That's my two cents, for what it's worth.

A good question indeed.

I'm putting a dual out header that I got used on my inline Mustang.

I have a new exhaust in place from the old manifold all the way back with a single Flowmaster 50 on it. Nice sound, I think.

Any problem doing a simple two into one on the header outlet.

also if I do a two into one...will it still be better performance than the original cast exhaust manifold?

Thanks,
Steve-O

For these engines, the debate of dual versus single is more image and fitment then anything else. A dual system can be a bitch to get to fit under the car without poking under the car's line.

basically, what do you want, and just size appropriately.

Steve-O- Merging a dual outlet header into a single, appropriately sized exhaust is a good way to go. It will significantly outperform the stock, OEM cast manifold. And you are saving the weight, expense and hassle of a second muffler and exhaust pipe system.

That's my two cents, but Slade is right. Whatever makes you happy. Everybody has their own "Best" way.

I love my dual exhaust, if for no other reason then on cold mornings seeing the exhaust come out both sides...

Yes, I'm superficial like that.

slades right the duals in the morning look sweet. i love how my duals sound, pacemaker header and dual 40series, loud but worth it

I am also switching to a dual out for the looks however it will be with a single in / dual out flowmaster 50 series - still 2 1/4 in but 2 inch pipe out so should look sweet without all the expense of a true dual out system.

it will be done as soon as the snow disappears
