DUI Problem

Well i have finally gotten some stuff done to my 65 mustang. I had the radiator brazed so that it doesnt leak. I swapped the autolite 1100 for a holley 2bbl 2300 350cfm carb with a summit adapter. I got all new hoses for the coolingsystem/heater. And i swapped in a new DUI ignition from Classic Inlines. Well I started the car on sunday, and it sounds like a champ! I am in the process of swapping in a cable throttle and the throttle response in much faster than before. Anyways to the problem. Since i do not have the gas pedal hooked up yet i am controlling the throttle from the engine compartemnt with a cable. I am hearing a very faint grinding noise from the base of the DUI every time i pull the throttle cable and then let the engine go back to idle. Is it possible that the DUI did not fit right? I followed the instructions perfectly and the unit went in like it was supposed to, but not i am hearing that noise and it is scaring me.

Any input would be extremely helpful.

Thank you very much!

Have you checked your oil for metal shavings?? Most oil pan drain plugs have a magnet and some of the metal shavings will stick to the plug. That would be the first place to look if things aren't meshing properly. Some dizzies have a oil port for internal lubricating. You might want to check that out as well.
I used a Lokar throttle cable, trans kick-down cable and gas pedal. If you need part numbers let me know.
Please keep us posted on what you find out.

Also....

Most dizzy drive grear teeth are made of a softer metal than the cam shaft teeth. This is done so that if you do tear things up, it's the dizzy and not the cam that you have to replace.

along with all this i would check to make sure that the oil pump intermediate shaft is securely seated.

i had a lot of problems with the shaft in my 200 (stock was too short, barely making the connection between the pump and the dizzy) so i ended up getting a shaft for a 351 and ground it down a bit

I will check this sometime tomorrow. I am planning to take the dizzy out and see if it has anything that isnt right about it. BTW is it possible to take the gear from the old dizzy and put it on the new DUI? Just wondering.

Thank you very much for the input!

I am not sure what the sound is actually but it seems to be coming from the dizzy. I noticed it when i reved the car. As the car came back to idle, there was a barely noticeable sound. I will pull the dizzy and put it back in and see if anything has changed and i will update you on the progress.

I will also be putting up some pics of before and after the swap.

Thank you very much!

Maybe the sound of the weights opening up on the advance?
Those change with throttle, maybe there is something loose or worn.

Well i dont think that anything could be worn, maybe loose, since this is a brand new DUI. I took out the DUI this morning and inspected it and there were no unusial wear marks or anything out of the ordinary, so i put it back in and tried to start the car and realized that i left the car door slightly open and the courtesy lights drained all the power from the battery. So its charging right now and i will start it in the morning and see if it still makes that noise.

Thank you for the input!

Well i started the car today with some trouble, but it started. And the scraping/grinding noise is still there and now i think it is actually coming from the DUI unit itself and not the base. The noise starts when the car is almost at idle. In any case i think its just the spring and weights coming back into place(hopefully). Also i have been trying to tinker with the new carb and its not very tuneable. By that i mean that i have tried to adjust the idle speed and it wont go down below 1000 or so. I have tried adjusting the idle speed and also the idle mixture screws and it still runs at about 1000 rpm. What can i do to get it down to normal idle speed?

Thank you very much!

Have you called Performance Distributors? If not, I would suggest calling and telling them what you are hearing. They should be able to tell you if its normal, or if it needs to be sent back. They will stand behind their products 100 percent. If anyone can tell you what the noise is, it will be them.

I will do just that. Thank you very much! I hadnt thought of calling them, so i will call them today and post back with the results. Other than the noise and the really high idle speed, the swap went well and all i need to do now is to adapt a cable throttle pedal so that it works.

Thank you for the input!
