Duraspark woes

Ok, so I had some trouble with my duraspark II. The power line to the module and (unbeknownst to me) the power line to the coil got fried. I replaced the line to the module and got a new module. No start, because the coil didn't have power. Ok, understandable, what I'm a little ticked off about it that it seems that when you apply power to the duraspark module AND the coil doesn't have power (which normally it should) it blows the module. I blew two, had them tested before and after I installed them, all because the coil didn't have power. Is this normal? If it is, it's a crappy design, with no safety on blowing modules....

you should switch to a chev module or even chrysler, I run GMs on several fords and they work very well and require only one wire from your ignition or from a relay powered from your ignition. See www.jason.fletcher.net/tech/duraspark/duraspark.htm
or look in the jacobs ignition book for details on the Chrysler modules which Jacobs contends are even better than GMs but I find that my Fords run better on GMs than the Ford module with less wiring and hassle. I used a piece of aluminum for a heat sink and mounted the module on my fender along with the coil.
