I was wanting to do the duraspark II swap on my 68 mustang 200. I have seen a couple of websites describing what you need but none that I have seen are exact. From what I ave read I need a 1978 dist., cap adapter, and rotor. I went on autozones website to see about how much it would cost but I dont know what to order it off of. Can somone give me specifics of what Car and motor I need this from? I know I need the ignition module and wires but I would buy an msd. Thanks, Tommy

I just got my stuff from Auto zone... I got the 78 dizzy from a Fairmont, you can get the module from the same vehicle if you wanted that, or the MSD. I also upgraded to an ignitor coil. Basically anything from a 77-80 will do.
I just posted yesterday about the wiring for all of it..Gotta go to my local salvage yard and yank the wiring off something similar to hook it all up.
Autozone's duraII was 49 bucks, the rotor and cap was another 10 or 15 bucks, and like i said i went ahead and got the ignition module too (9 bucks)....HOpe this helps

Tell them it's for a '78 Fairmont with an I-6. That should get you going.

You'll need:
-Cap
-Rotor
-Plug Wires
-(Maybe) Ballast Resistor
-Electronic Ignition-compatible Coil (either stock '78 with the rest of the rig, or any of the flavors in the aftermarket)
-A good wiring diagram to hook it all up.
-A wrecking yard wiring harness to mate all the plugs OR good spade connectors and crimping tools.

I also had to buy some adapter that went between the dizzy and the cap. Why it wasn't included with the rest is beyond me. This was a Napa purchase. Other stores may package differently.

You'l need 1.msd 6a all wiring is included in the kit and the wiring diagram 2. plug wires( get the 8 or 9 mm but noit solid core wires. 3. plugs indexed ( open gap straight up in the engine. 4. distributor for a 79 fairmont straight six 200 c.i. 5. adaptor for the distributor This is part of the distributor and only $3 from hi lo oreilley. 6. distributor cap and rotor.

The distributor drops straight in and the msd bolts to the fender wall. be sure to bypass your ignition switch as the voltage is reduced by a suppressor wire to six volts. there is a wire on the ignition switch that you cut and run a neww wire to the msd. wire provided in the msd kit(box).
All the other connections are provided in the kit as wire splices couplers and grommets.

I am just about to do that set up on my 69 Mustang with a 250 and I wanted to double check that I understood correctly. There is a resister wire on the late 60s mustangs that reduces the ignition voltage to 6 volts. This will need to be bypassed? So I could just remove this wire off the switch and install a non-resistor wire and use that to hook up to the MSD?

Did I get that right? :?

yes remove the resistor wire. mine was pink and very thick and about four foot long. There was way too much wire and curled up in a ball under the dash. maybe someone replaced the old one. your early six coil only used 6 volts. newer coils need 12 volts.

Let me give a wing at this
you need the distributor

The cap adapter, most people either forget or dont know about this part for a Duraspark II. I have been told but have not verified myself that you can use a Duraspark I cap on a DII dist and retain the original wires but you lose the added space between the contact terminals which is supposed to help prevent arcing and crossfiring.

And the cap and rotor

Then your choice of ignition modules, I am running a GM HEI module with mine, my buddy is running a duraspark module on his '66. Both have custom wiring. His started off as a harness out of a late 70's Fairmont with a 200 and we trimmed and resoldered it to make it 'pretty' mine is all made by me.

On a '68 I *think* you should be OK with the factory vacuum mounting location on the intake manifold but on older cars you have to double check that you are getting the right amount of vacuum signal to the vacuum advance.

Yours may be the right parts but there were no pictures and I cant do anything without pictures..
