you will want a single vac DSII, u can use the cap for a DSI, if you want to use points type wires. if ur at the parts store. 1978 Ford Fairmont, 200 I6, single vac distributor. that'll work

Why mess with e-bay? Just go to Mustangs Unlimited or NPD or California Mustang and order it there. Yes, there is a difference for the 6's and 8's. They have a description of the difference between the two as well.

I went the 78 fairmount 200 6 single vac route first at the junkyard (one that computer stocks their parts) and when it turned out to be worn out used it as a core ($10IIRC) at the parts store. I paid $10 for it at the yard and got to keep the cap adaptor which you dont get at the parts store and need if you are going to run the clip on DS2 cap. Parts stores list these in their catalogs but im not sure if they stock them or not. I think they are the same as the V8's so they may have them. This adaptor has the clips that hold the cap on and screws to the dizzy body. If you get the 74 mav cap it kinda looks like the points one except it screws directly to the dizzy body. Make sure you get the rotor to match the cap you buy.

8) i used a duraspark dist from a 79 fairmont 3.3L, and hooked it to a chrysler ignition box. works just fine. the one i got had been through an engine fire, so i also replaced the pick up as ewll.
