E85 ???

We have tried it. And we like it. I had to use a 106 jet in the 350cfm Holley to get the A/F ratio about right. But we still needed some idle circuit work to get it to idle worth a crap.
Kelly did run a 12.05@115 on 100% E85. (best mph to date!)
Normally we run a mixture of Trick 106 and E85.

I will soon be building a new carb (450cfm 4bbl Holley) that'll go onto a modified Oz intake (and Oz 250-2v head of course) that'll be dedicated to run exclusively on E85.

I understand, you mean without other additives.

Oddly enough, the only places where E85 is readily available are in the Corn Belt. Unless you are lucky enough to have one of the three California stations down the street from you.
 
central IL is pretty corn belty and can hardly get it around there. down in southern IL I am not even sure if there is a pump within 75 miles with the stuff.
 
You can mix your own. Just go to the local paint store and get a gallon and a half of brush cleaner or shellac thinner and mix it with 8 and a half gallons of your favorite petrol: APCO, Darby, Spur, 7-11, Gold Eagle; any of the majors.
 
if we move to an ethanol economy and away from oil, then we would use other crops besides corn. There are other better starchy crops that have other useful by products beside corn, corn is just familiar to the US so it is what everyone uses as a picture, and currently, eccess corn is used because it is available.

Brazil is corrupt and a political nightmare but they are completely energy independent, yet we can't do it here.

michigan has ran 10% Ethanol for years. no one has ever had a problem.
all you have to do is upgrade lines to newer rubbers or materials, and then they won't get eaten by the fuel, if you are using 30/40 year old lines, they should be replaced anyway.

as for price, as the infrastructure grows and economies of scale come into play the price should come down significantly as well.
 
Latest info on my futura E85 test.
Getting time to go to the nearest station has been troublesome at best. Tooooo much OT at work.
But I did resolve the hard start issue. Unhooked the vac line to the choke pulloff and plugged it. No more hard starts. So when I use regular unleaded I just hook it up again. Takes all of 30 seconds.
Be nice to have a switch to do this with.

The suggestion for setting timing is good but may not be sufficient. Your distributor is calibrated for EGR; if you disabled that system you need to rebuild your distributor with the weights, springs, and vacuum-advancer from a pre-EGR 200. Not a bad idea to go through a distributor that old in any case, and it's an easy job.

I think the alcohol blended gas won't hurt you car as long as it is your daily driver. Gasohol is bad in engines that do a lot of sitting, such as pleasure boats, chainsaws, garden equipment. And it wouldn't hurt them if the fuel system was drained at the end of the season. As Boyd can tell you, 90% of small engine problems are fuel related. Most of the bad reputation two-strokes have comes from their owners not draining and maintaining, which is really pretty simple to do.

I disliked the sniffy tone of the Consumer Reports article (CU is always sniffy, because they are critics, and never had to build anything themselves), which dismissed ethanol as not being the solution to our energy problems. Gee, no kidding!! THERE IS NO SINGLE FIX FOR OUR ENERGY PROBLEMS; ALL COMPLEX PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED BY A COMBINATION OF MANY SMALL FIXES.

However, they made one very good and not widely appreciated point: given the comparatively small volume of ethanol likely to be produced, we as a country can replace gasoline with ethanol just as well with E-10 as with E-85. Think about it.

That's backwards......its 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline :stick:
 
Here's a thought:
Ethanol lowers flame temperatures below the point where oxides of nitrogen can form. That means that you could run an ethanol fueled engine almost piston burning lean without any negative effect on emissions. It is just possible that the E85 EFI systems take advantage of this fact. If that is the case, they could recoup some of the loss in fuel economy vs. a gasoline engine at stoichiometric.
 
:( Ludwig has a point about the marine motors being damaged by E85.Mercury Marine said in the latest issue of Bass Times(R),that use of E85 in their engines will IMMEDIATELY void the warrentee.

I think the problems with E85 will soon be worked out. Remember when lead was removed from gasoline? Most people thought that building a
performance engine was over,it wasn't. When computorized carbs started
showing up most everyone thought tuning would be impossible,it wasn't.
American ingenuity is outstanding,I think the problems with E85 will be resolved and we will all be the better for it.
As the old saying goes -Necesity is the Mother of invention-.

stop complaining that you have it, and start finding ways to make it kick butt in our i6's!!!

I just want to see the US be more energy independent. Ethanol is a renewable resource that can get rid of farm subsidies going to large farm corporations and get some money back to the american farmer.

A win win on both sides. the oil companies have the money to build the infrastructure, we already have the farmers and land to get it done sitting fallow, it burns cleaner has a higher octane (yay boost) and then we don't shell out billions to foreign corps for a large portion our energy needs.
