Engine Colors

We have a 1962 Mercury Meteor 4 dr sedan. The engine is a 170 6 cyl and it has been pulled for detailing and some repairs. We know that the block should be black and the valve cover is silver..........but what color should the air breather and oil cap be??????

We have a pic showing that the block is black with silver valve cover, and an orange/red fan.

Does anyone know as we want this to be completely original. Thank you.

Maybe I forgot but nearly all Ford fans are black.
Is it a "promo" picture or illustration you are using?
A lot of those had funny colors, green exhaust manifolds, etc - colors that were not ever used.
I dont know the combo - Merc colors were different from Ford, but because of that orange fan I'd be wary of the other colors too.

A past issue of Legendary Ford Mag has a pic of a restored 62 or so Meteor or Comet (forgot which), shows a 6 (170 I think), black block and yellow cover/aircleaner. And of course black fan. I'd trust that one more as a restored car. Sorry I forgot the issue and dont have it here, may have been a Merc or Comet or 6-cyl special issue of LFM???

sandafar,

Just pulled my 170 from my 63 Merc Econoline... all black, only thing red was valve cover. Recently applied same treatment to another 170, but used Duplicolor gunmetal instead of black (looks sharp, easier to see block details), and also did oilpan in Ford Red.

Good luck!
