Hey guys, this is bryan out of niagara falls new york with a 1967 200ci six and i am debating about buiding up the six or trying to change over half the car for a 289 or 302... i would like to hear from you about your website or buildup u have done and the dyno's u have done....i always hear about alot of build ups but not horsepower figures... thanx

ps if u were going to spend 1500 what would be the best way to get the most amount of horsepower out of the engine.....in other words fast enogh to beat a friends completly stock honda civic that is junk but can still woop the shit out of my stanf with its 140 hp engine. thanx again

$1500 is a fair amount of money. If the current motor's bottom end is in good shape then I would do the following.

1. ignition upgrade - durspark and msd box
2. upgrade to a header
3. change the old, tired, worn timing chain
4. get "bigger" cam
5. find a '77 or later head
a.) modify to direct mount a Holley 350 or 500
b.) larger exhuaust valves, the intake should already have 1.75"
c.) new seats
d.) new guides
e.) 3 angle valve job
f.) new springs while you're at it

that's all I can think of. others will jump in soon

A discreetly hidden NOS bottle should do wonders for an occasional eye opener. Just "for laughs."
Just make sure the rest of the powertrain is in good shape, or you'll scatter gears all over the place.

I would say direct mount 350cfm holley, same head mods, cam and a blow through turbo setup. for what you spend on the header you can pic up a good used turbo and build a log manifold for it. I am making the turbo plunge this month (hopefully with a 1100 autolite to keep it even cheaper)

If you do most of the upgrades mentioned, do a little port work on the exhaust, none other than, I did a gasket match job and had to grind out A LOT! then put on a Cliffy dual out header and it does sound sweet!

i was also wondering does anyone that has already done an engine buildup have and horsepower ratings or dyno that they have done....i can;t see putting over a grand in a strait six if it will not gain much horsepower...

umm well does10s car runs 12's, its mostly stock with only a cam, carb, ignition system, and a turbo, could prolly do it for under 1500 this comes out to about 300 hp.... not bad also you get the "cool factor" of opening the hood and watching the peoples mouths drop....

If you want 200RWHP without force air...go with the V-8. It sounds like you really want the power and honestly, the 200 is not the way for that with a limited budget. The motto of the 6 is "It's now how fast you go, but how go you fast". It's just different. I've dropped about $1800 into engine mods over the last 2 years and I have 140RWHP. That's the HP of a stock 289 4V A-code engine from a 65 mustang. It'll make the car move. If I go turbo, I reckon I can get 200-220RWHP without anything radical, but who knows.

I agree with cobrasix and if it wasn't for the "dare to be different" factor of the six then i would be switching to the 8. I love horsepower and plant your ass back in the seat torque but with the 8 it is just another mustang. so i am going to try it with the 6.

swapping to the 8 is supposed to be more expensive however most of us have already spent what it would cost to do that and changed alot of our suspension anyway. By the time i am done with my mustang if i wanted to throw in an 8 it would be easily accomplished.

1500 won't be enough no matter what you do cause once you start you will be addicted and cannot stop. Its like being a junkie all you want is more power

I'd go with an oz or argie head to open up the breathing - it will give you an nice boost in power and everything you add after that will have a greater effect.

good Luck

I Agree totally, I had 1,500 to spend also. I spent 880.00 on rebuilding the six. 300.00 for headers. and 200.00 for the exhaust system, 240.00 for holley carb, 70.00 for adapter (then gonna need to buy new air cleaner -40.00) vavle cover .. as you can tell, its way more than my budget.

Its sooo fun though, once you upgrade something.. you need to spend more money on other parts so that part that bought first works to the max. Then your gonnna spend more money on the parts you bought to maek the first thing max out. Its like a domino effect, once u get something.. you wanna get more. I dont think there is ever an end to it...

If your trying to get the horsepower of a vee 8 (289, 302) then you might as well go with that. I too had the choice, i have a 302 in my garage, but i insisted on staying with the I6.

NO matter what you do dude, good luck w/ the project
