I am now wanting to keep my 6 instead of getting the 302. I have decided to go ahead and rebuild the engine. Is there any performance stuff I can do to this while rebuilding to squeeze out a little more horsepower??? I am pretty sure the engine is a 144 due to it being in a 60 falcon and the lady I bought the car from said it was original. Thanks for any help.

plenty of things you can do
first thing i'd suggest would be buying the Ford Falcon SIX Cylinder PERFORMANCE HANDBOOK

most common suggestions will be along the lines of improving the ignition system (with a Petronix setup, or possibly a Duraspark II system, i don't know if it'd fit a 144 though) and then the exhaust system

good luck with it

Howdy EddieJ:

My compliments on your excellent discission. Know that you have the well spring of many of FoMoCo's better ideas. It will become the foundation of many vehicles, including the "All New" Mustang, from 1960 to well into the 70's. Know your heritage!

It's ironic that the Falcon Performance Handbook became a reality when my nephew bought a '62 Falcon with a 144 and a 3 speed. He ask his dad and uncle what he should do to get a little more power out of it. After we unloaded on him several times, he said, "You guys ought to write a book". We did!

1st check the casting # of the head and the block to determine what you have. What trans?

Yes, EddieJ there are a bunch of things you can do to get the most out of your ancient bird. Read this forum regularly and learn, buy a shop manual and study, ask questions and listen. Then decide for yourself what you want; restore, restomod, street machine,???? Then plan and budget. And, of course we'd love to hear that the FPH is of use to you.

Best of wishes on this project.

Adios, David

The exhaust system is one of the first things that should be upgraded. The breathability of the Falcon 6cyl engine is a probolem. Installing a dual out header from FSPP and a nice exhaust system will really wake the engine up. I installed a FSPP dual out header on my '68 200ci engine and ran dual exhaust with Borla ProXS mufflers. Depending on your engine rebuild, I would suggest that a nice single exhaust system will benefit your 144ci engine (someone correct me if I am mistaken  ). I plan to install a 2bbl. carburetor this week. It will be a nice upgrade over the current 1bbl carb. Read the other posts here and you will learn much.

David,

I would like to thank you and your brother for writing the Ford Falcon Performance Handbook. :D
