hey guys, aint been on in a while but im back with a question....

my starter motor on my XF finally kicked the bucket (the shaft broke in two) i got another starter motor from a mate at work, however the size of this starter motor is a fair bit smaller than the one i had... the shaft and end section appear the same size and it fits into the existing spot, but will not do anything when the key is turned.... when i hold a spanner over the terminals on the s/motor it makes a noise, kinda sounds like the gear is spinning but not engaging the with the fly wheel... is this motor possibly from a 3.3l motor? and wont work on my 4.1?? the s/motor was working in the other car up until a week ago....

any help is appreciated

The newer starter motors are smaller than the old xf ones which is a good thing as ithink they have mor kw and sit further away from the exhaust. Sounds like the solenoid might be f**** but might be asimple electrical thing. You could pull it off and check if it spins the gear when powered.

oh ok... after it didnt work i just assumed being smaller that it musta just been wrong and i left it at that, i probably shouldda checked a few more things first..... if i just connect up a + & - to the s/motor solenoid ill be able to check it right?

THE eb-ba falcon ones are tini in size, the actual motor diameter is only just bigger than the solenoid. Pull it of and make sure the gear throws out when u apply power to the plug on the solenoid, the one where youre stater wire goes... THey are very cheap brand new, second hand dont pay more than 50 for one

Hello! I just thought I would add my 2 cents worth... The little reduction starters are excellent because
1) they are smaller and lighter
2) they don't get cooked by #5 exhaust pipe (my car, anyway)
3) they start REALLY tight motors
4) will function even with tiny batteries (I was using a 260amp battery for 9 months until the cold mornings killed it!)
5) they seem to last and are cheap

Enjoy!

I have a reduction starter in mine, its twice as light as the normal ones and turns the motor over faster and you have room to get your hands in and bolt it up, the older one was smack up against my extractors and burn the wire at the solenoid, I got it 2nd hand at the wreckers for $35

well thats good to know that theyre a good starter.... still had problems with mine though... its not 'likely' its buggered due to the fact it worked a matter of days before i got it but i wont rule it out... it only started once via the key in ignition after several previouse attempts.... it now starts when crossing the terminals on it, but not by key.... i think ill just let an auto lecky have a look, i dont have the time at the moment.....

thanks guys,

-matt

if itaqs an auto car.. sounds like the neutral start switch is buggered try moving the gear stick while key is on crank..

hey guys.... turns out the problem with starting was caused by a severe drop in voltage.... caused by old wiring and a better starter motor than before.... a simple relay fixed it right up :-)

thanks for the help anyways
