Ok my buddy has a rebuilt 170 by reputable motor rebuilders about 5 years but only 200 or less miles on it. Anyways it getting not much oil in each of the cylinder. He first thought it was the oil bath cleaner that he might have had the level to high on the oil bath bowl. But that doesn’t seem to be the issue.

Where could the oil be coming from… rings, valve seal or PCV?

Any thoughts or things to test or look at would be appreciated, Jeff

If he has a rebuild with 200 miles on it over the last 5 years, my suspicion is that the rings have not seated yet. If they used the regular cast iron top rings, it takes about 500 miles to seat. If they used Moly rings then it’s maybe 30 miles to seat.

Also, if the engine has only 200 miles in 5 years, it could be that the valve guide seals have dried up and are allowing oil to get in via the valve stems. It’s not likely that all of them would be gone though so I would suspect the rings not being seated would be the culprit.

My recommendation would be to see if he can get the engine to break in correctly and then, if it’s still using oil, do a wet and a dry compression test to see if the rings are truly seated.
