exhaust options....

well...I will be starting the turbo soon and I am playing with one option I have in IL...if I have a turbo a muffler is optional. I am thinking of lake pipes out each side.figured since the sound is away from teh car it shouldn't be too bad (no tunnels in IL to drive through) and I would be installing spark plugs inteh ends for any oer rich conditions that might come up.

the other option is dual out the back with glass packs mounted at the bumper.

I'm guessing you're going to pull all six cylinders together in the turbo manifold. That means a single exhaust out of the turbine. I would recommend you use a single, large diameter exhaust with no muffler. Try that first.

The turbo will reduce the exhaust noise and you don't need any restrictions after the turbine.

Duals would not sound like conventional six cylinder duals anyway.

I have no muffler on my turbo diesel and the sound level is low. In fact there was little change when I replaced the muffler with a section of straight pipe.

I enjoy telling people that the best muffler they could possibly put on a car... is a turbocharger. :) I've heard many people say that a turbo car with no muffler sounds about as loud as a NA car with a performance muffler. Also since a turbo basically kills the exhaust tuning you don't need to worry about exhaust gas velocity. You want as little exhaust restriction as possible, it will minimize the turbo's spool up time.

well I have owned two factory turbo cars (tbird and a merkur) both have been run with no mufflers. I found that a megaphone style tip is needed to mellow the sound and keep it from sounding ricer like. I am not too concerned about sound as much as I am about simplicity. I am putting a 4link rear in soon and with the air bags don't think I have room for a single large exhuast but only 2" duals. everything I do is welded j bends so flow will still be pretty good.and being that the car is in flat black right now with fender skirts and I kinda have the whole 50's look Kustom going on I think the lakes would look nicer (prob a single outlet polish SS...maybe triples)

since nothing will be ran back in the tranny tunnel I will not have to worry about clearances in back...just up front where I think I can get by ok (will have to come out at the tail end of the front wheel wells)
