Ok people have asked for diffrent exhaust sound files. So here is mine. it is a stock 200, with pacemaker headers Y ed into one 2.25 inch pipe, going through a cheap turbo muffler, to a 2.25 inch tip. http://members.cox.net/laurencstill/mustang sound.wav

So what'd you rev it to? About 3500? Was there any EQ on the input? What type of mike (or was it the camcorder microphone?)... How close were you to the pipe tip? Is it running rich?

recording exhaust sounds is a science for itself... and I haven´t even tried yet.

I remember a quote of 70´s movie director Monte Hellman who stated that racecar sounds were difficult to record, because of the WIDE range of frequencies, impedance and distortion of the tone.
the original recordings (lots of them from different points, and taken with different microphones) took a lot of refinement in the studio afterwards to make them sound somehwat closer to what the crew "actually heard with their own ears".

Amazingly, a lot of the sound files found on the homepages of the commercial muffler makers (ain´t they considered "pro´s"?) sound erratic and lame.

When I recorded my 68's 200, I just used the mic that was built into my laptop, and sat the laptop about 12" away from the exhaust pipe, which points downward, just before the rear axle (i get good reverb off the pavement ). All I used to record was Win98's sound recorder program. Halfway through the recording, I noticed the face of the laptop was turned away from the direction where the exhaust was. Halfway through my soundbyte, I turned the face of the laptop toward the exhaust- which seemed to help make the sound less muffled. By the way, the mic for the laptop is at the top of the keyboard, near where the lcd & keyboard fold, so i guess sounds can 'funnel' their way toward the mic when it is facing the source. Just to make sure people know, that wasn't with the Oz head, i am not sure why but it sounds a little diffrent with the oz head and the 4V carb. I just used the mic on my ibm 770 thinkpad. It was about 18" away and the computer was on the ground parelle to the exhaust. I used the standard Windows 2000 Professional sound recordered also. I am not sure what an EQ is but i didn't change the sound file at all. BTW, Yes it is running a little rich. I think that was reved up to the 3k RPM-3.5k RPM range my dad controlled the throttel and he did it from inside the engine compartment.

Sounds great! I don't know why people say that I-6's sound wimpy, but they obviously weren't listening to one like yours.

I do agree that it sounds way fat at the top end. Lean that baby out a bit and it'll have an even nicer bark!

Good to know my ears aren't ruined yet.

It'll sound different with the 2V/4V head because the flow quality is so different.

The recording sounded like the mike was a little close, that's all. Getting about a yard from the tip at 45° to the line of the pipe and no closer to the ground, will give a weaker signal but one that's not so prone to saturation (that "blatty', bubbling tendancy of the sound reproduction that is not like real life). Anyway, it is good to hear!

what are you running Okefenokee Comet? Yeah it is running rich but we have having some carb problems with this that is getting a little more then annoying. I am also running a stock ingition as of now, but that will hopefully change very soon with an msd 6al. As soon as we get the gaskets from mike i am switching back to my 4v Oz head. As i said to mike in an e mail.

I switched engines this weekend, and the new block was a stock rebuild i bought from some one, and after driving my engine with the oz head the stock just doesn't seem up to par. I wanted to get my oz head on there asap, because after driving the car with the Oz head and driving it back at factory spec's it is somewhat depressing.

It's the stock cast iron manifold with generic turbo muffler. I'll be adding headers with dual borla's eventually. My problems have been like a tough piece of meat, the more you chew it the bigger it gets. Hope to have the front end finished next week.

I'm running a 78 exhaust manifold going to a stock single 2" exhaust pipe, which ends in front of the rear axle, after it exits a cherry bomb & 45 degree elbow, acting as a turn down. I sorta regret that decision to shorten the exhaust under the car, being that my trunk is all smashed in & now lets exhaust come into the passenger compartment
