My 65 stang with a 200: I turn the key and the starter just spins but never engages the engine. It has a new starter (which the bendix works properly in), new solenoid, new ignition switch, etc. and the fly wheel has no broken teeth. This problem isn't even possible - solenoid, flywheel, starter - that is the entire starting system of the car. I just don't understand. I've tried everything, I'm beat - I have NO idea...

Do you mean the starter is just spinning, or is the engine turning over and just not firing?

If the starter is spinning it will make a high-speed whine.

If the engine is turning it will make a more traditional sound and just not fire.

Which is happening?

Well, if the starter spins, then it is not the ignition switch and probably not the solenoid (I have however seen one where the solenoid had enough resistance that the starter woud not engagae...but only one) But yours is new, so I would quicky rule that out.

If the starter checks out OK, then it can only be that it is not making contact with the teeth of the flywheel either because it is not aligned correctly or because it is the wrong starter.

I would check to insure that your new starter is the corret one (and not just the box...it could have been mis-packed) If it is, the I would compare it to another starter from a 65 to make sure that the auto parts store has the right one in the compuer (it happens)

The other one is to make sure that the flywheel is the right one.

I remember reading someplace that the late model 200s use a different diameter flywheel than the early ones. Perhaps you were just given the wrong unit.

Two things happen when the starter is engaged. The windings engage the motor that spins the gear and the Bendix assembly that moves the gear out to meet the ring gear. Sounds like the Bendix is not engaging.

We have a local salvage yard that rebuild starters and can check a starter in less than 20 seconds. Remove the starter and find an outfit that can check it out.

Good luck, Ric.
