I have a head off a '80 Fairmont in the machine shop now. I plan on installing it on my Mustang 200 soon with a n Autolite 2100 carb. I was weondering if the carb spacer that is on the fairmont head needs to be there or if there is an adapter that will allow me to remove this and still run the 2100? I am trying to eliminate any hood clearance issues that It may cause.

I would go for a direct mount carb to minimoze hood clearance problems. I have a direct mount that I bought already done. I have not installed it on my car yet, but I think with a standard Hipo 14" air cleaner and a 2100 the height will be about the same as the stock carb and aircleaner.

Yes off of an 80 fairmont with a 250. Having it milled to reduced combustion chamber size.

Howdy:

The stock OEM adapter is there to correctly orient the stock carb for linkage and other lines and hoses to it. It can be removed to gain space.

Most 2 barrel adapters do not have the mounting holes drilled. When you get your adapter you will have line it up to correctly orient your 2100 and then drill the holes to match your head.

The standard engine for a Fairmont is a 200. 250 in 1980 were used in the Granada/Monarch lines only. If this head was off a Fairmont with a 250 you have found a very rare piece.

Don't forget to take into consideration the extra thickness of the new head gasket when milling it. .050" for the extra cc volume AND .025" for the difference in head gasket thickness. That's .075" to maintain a stock '65 - '67 9.2:1 CR.

Be sure to use hardened washers under the head bolts on assembly.

Thamks David, I knew one of you guys would know the answer. To tell you the truth, I don't remember for sure which it was I pulled it off of. I could have sworn it was a Fairmont, but it might have been a Granada wagon. The casting code has a "B" in the place which indicates the type of car it was made for. Maybe one of you knows that info as I have been unable to verify that code. In any case didn't you say in your book that all later model 200 & 250 heads were the same?

Howdy Back:

Yes, to the best of our investigation the late model 200 & 250 heads are the same.
