First start, not firing up...

Well, I tried starting it up this afternoon for the first time. No such luck.

Here's some info on it: We are getting spark to the plug; the timing we tried the current way, and 180*. It's at TDC and it's pointing at rotor #1. We could hear gas going in the carb when we hit the throttle, but to doublecheck, we poured some in there.

It's the Load-O-matic with the HolleyWeber 5200 carb, C4, 200ci, ... anything else, just ask me.

Might try a little starting fluid but ONLY a small shot and ONLY while the engine is turning over. Don't load the carb up with the stuff and then turn the engine over...only small shots while the engine is turning over.

Well, if you have compression, and you've got some fuel in there - you are either lacking spark or the timing is wrong.

Move the dist around and see what happens.

could be choke is closed all the way, or timing issue, even if timing was off abit it would attempt to start. close the choke just abit and get some brave soul to move the dist back and forth slowly and open the throttle as someone cranks it. just a guess so take it for what its worth :)

Before you do anything else, recheck: Is the rotor pointing at #1 at TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke? If both valves are not completely closed, you're on the exhaust stroke and it will never fire

What usually happens to me when trying to start a motor that has been apart it turns out to be a combo of issues. At first you make some mistake that causes it to get flooded. After you fix that you have drained the battery so you loose that 'edge'. Then you get the 180 idea and make things worse. If it was me I would yank out the plugs and get them good and clean and perhaps let it sit overnight to evaporate some extra fuel. Get the battery fully charged again. Verify you are on TDC of the compression stroke of #1 then get it so the rotor is pointed at #1. Check for spark. If you got it give it a crank. You can use the timing light during cranking to get it closer. You shouldnt need a ton of fuel to get it to show some signs of life.

Not that it should prevent you from starting but does that carb have a scv?

Hope it's not the valves - that would be horrible...

The plugs should all be in there pretty tight. I'll doublecheck.

fordconvert may be right. It might be flooded. I let it sit, and I'll try to put some juice in the battery and start it up again. Thanks

Take the plugs out and clean em. Even better if you let it sit for a while with the plugs out. If the plugs are wet when you take them out dont give it any gas when you try to start it because there will be plenty in there.

Well, I found one large problem. One guy that was helping me put the distributor in on top of the hold down clamp. Not good, so I fixed it, and it did a LOT better. It was kinda popping, like it was about to turn over, but it never did. Plugs were all in there tight. I put a charger on the battery and it was reading 4-5 amps. I let it sit there for a little while, then tried to crank it - same thing. Triple-checked the timing, and it's right. It was just me, so I couldn't rotate it while it was cranking, but maybe today I can give that a shot. It's really close, but not there yet.

If you jump the starter solenoid terminals with a screwdriver, you can stand right there. Just a thought.

You would jump the main one from the batt. to the other side which goes to the starter,.

Wrong-O. That would be somewhat hard to do with a screwdriver. These two here work just fine:

Also note that the key has to be in the ON position.

If you hook a piece of wire hook it to the small post, that way if it sags and shorts to something noting will happen.

Parts stores sell a little trigger thing with clips on the end just for this. I made mine from surplus parts I had laying around.

Being that your dissy wasn't fully seated it probably jumped time either while turning the motor over or when you reseated it properly, it's just a thought but you might want to recheck it if you haven't already.
