Fixing Brass Float

Hi Everyone,

My Autolite 1100 started leaking all of a sudden. Took it apart to do a rebuild. I could hear fuel sloshing around in brass float. Held float under very hot water with needle nose pliers and could see bubbles coming out of one area. It is along the soldered seam that separates the two halves. I have already found brand new ones online. However, can it be salvaged by me soldering over the opening? Next question, how on earth would I go about getting the fuel out of there? It definitely will not come out of the existing hole (too small)? Has anyone ever dealt with this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have never tried this or heard of anyone doing this, so I don't know if it would work. Since the float is leaking you will not be out anything for trying.

I'd drill a small hole (1/16" is the smallest bit I have) right where you are now leaking and see if you could get the fuel out. If that don't work drill a second hole on the opposite side of the seam to let air in and the fuel should come out. I'd use a hot soldering iron and a dab of solder to patch the hole(s).

If it don't work you are out a bit of time. If it does work you don't have to order a new float.

I have repaired several brass floats you can use an awl to open the crack enough to drain the fuel out.

and once you have drained the float, you can solder the opening. one thing to be careful of, and that is using too much solder in repairing the float.
